Job summary

Are you experienced in Environment and Sustainability?  We have an exciting new opportunity within our Project Management Office for a Sustainability Manager. This role will be engaged in assisting in the identification of and engagement with sustainable infrastructure solutions progressing sustainable and evidenced outcomes within the Command Infrastructure Delivery Plan (CIDP) portfolio of projects. Each task will be addressed with the appropriate Senior team/Top-Level Budget-Holder (TLB) and the Industry Partner (IP) to assist in creating a programme plan.

This role sits within the Capability Team of the Project Management Office (PMO) delivering billable works and will directly report to the Senior Sustainability Manager.

The Sustainability Manager will be responsible for developing sustainable solutions within a wide range of infra projects across Defence Estate, in collaboration with our IP. Verifying information provided by others to outline future plans to ensure they are full, accurate and correct. Then following approval, ensure that construction activity remains compliant to the approved assessment and required MOD standards. 

The Sustainability Manager will deliver the above working closely with the PMO Operations Team and wider stakeholders to bring into focus and embed sustainability in projects, as well as developing sustainability assessments with the IP.  

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. 

Job description

  • Work closely with South East Industry Partner (IP) in creation of sustainability assessments and statements, and review submissions for conformance to required standards.
  • Be actively involved in the early development of the Command Infrastructure Delivery Plan (CIDP) with the PMO Future Programmes Manager to ensure sustainability is at the forefront of deliverability assessments from the IP.
  • Engage with tasks across the billable works business in progressing renewables, products and services in collaboration with IPs.
  • Collaborate closely with SERP Utilities team and wider DIO areas of business.
  •  Support the Senior Sustainability Manager in challenging the IP to evidence sustainability thinking and deliverables.
  • Actively engage with sustainable marketplace innovation to bring into the Estate and our IP.
  • Proactively and positively engage with all relevant stakeholders as may be required to ensure best standards of delivery.
  • Support the Senior Sustainability Manager in creating regular updates of the billable works renewable performance management.
  • Ensure Legislative requirements are met in collaboration with wider MOD and IP

      Person specification

      Essential   

      A background in the sustainability arena or able demonstrate knowledge and an active interest in the principles of sustainability.

      Desirable

      Experience of working on projects within a construction, facilities management, infrastructure environment

      Strong stakeholder management skills.

      Licences

      Full driving licence is required as visits to multiple sites are needed sometimes at short notice and are not accessible by public transport.

      Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.       External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
