Job description

The Climate Change Committee is the independent expert statutory adviser to Parliament and the UK Government on climate change policy. It was created as a key part of the long-term legal framework set out in the Climate Change Act (2008). The Act sets a long-term target for 2050 (Net Zero, a 100% reduction in net emissions from 1990) and requires that carbon budgets (five-year caps on emissions) are set on a path towards the long-term target. The Act also requires that the UK assesses and responds to the risks that it faces as the climate changes.

The CCC has established itself as a high-profile, high-impact expert body in the analysis of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Its reports can be accessed from the CCC’s website: www.theccc.org.uk

The CCC is comprised of two Boards (‘the Committee’ and ‘the Adaptation Committee’) and an analytical secretariat. The Committees have a distinguished membership of leading experts from the fields of climate change, science, engineering and economics: www.theccc.org.uk/about-the-ccc/the-committee. The Committees are supported by a Secretariat of around 40 economists, operational researchers, scientists and other analysts.

The CCC was the first body of its kind in the world and brings together different strands of expertise from its members, from government, the research community and business. It draws on existing information and undertakes its own analysis to provide expert advice to Ministers and to Parliament. It is required to give advice to Ministers on climate change matters covered by the Climate Change Act and on an ad-hoc basis as and when requested.

Role description

The CCC is hiring a Media and Communications professional at Senior Manager level. This is an exciting new role in the organisation, designed to reflect the increased importance of media and communications work.

This role will be responsible for leading our media and corporate communications day to day work, reporting to the Head of Communications and Engagement. The role will work closely with that role and with senior management, as well as the Committees. The role will line manager the Design and Communications Officer.

The main accountabilities of the role are:

Media

  • Be the lead contact for media for the Climate Change Committee (CCC). Manage incoming enquiries in a timely and informed manner.
  • Build and manage relationships with stakeholders across the media spectrum to ensure regular, accurate coverage of the CCC’s work. Undertake an ambitious media outreach approach with organisations and outlets across the political spectrum and in a range of disciplines.
  • Provide media handling advice to staff and Committee members and advise on messaging (particularly around the launch of key reports).
  • Monitor coverage of the Climate Change Committee and ensure the organisation is appropriately informed about our media exposure.
  • Participate in crisis communication planning. ·
  • Ensure the Committee and Secretariat are fully briefed ahead of high-profile events such as reports. Hold briefing sessions and provide appropriate materials.
  • Position the organisation through op-eds and thought leadership work. Use the opportunity to grow our social media presence.
  • Spread the messages and positions of the CCC to a broad audience through the appropriate platforms.

Corporate communications

  • Develop and implement communications plans for many of the CCC’s key projects (e.g., report launches, handling plans for Government announcements). Communicate these plans with staff and Committee members.
  • Manage our organisational social media channels. This includes regular posting, building out our audience, and future planning. Support Committee members and the secretariat on social media content drafting and best practice use.
  • Lead on our communications monitoring, evaluation, and reporting to Committee members and staff.
  • Manage key relationships with suppliers (media and parliamentary monitoring).



Person specification

Essential criteria

  • Relevant experience with broadcast, print and new form media.
  • Experience in developing and managing communications plans for big moments eg. Report launches.
  • Experience of working in a busy press office.
  • Experienced in broader communications disciplines (eg. Digital, social, brand).
  • Experienced in building trusted relationships with key media figures.
  • Experienced in preparing senior stakeholders for media engagement - both with written briefings and in-person sessions.
  • Knowledge of monitoring media coverage and effectively communicating that regularly to senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in working in the climate, energy or environmental spaces.
  • Experience in crisis communications.
  • Experience managing social media platforms.
  • Experience in line management.



Notes

The CCC office is based in Canary Wharf, London, with staff expected to attend the office for 40% of their contracted hours. The pay band for this role is£59,782- £66,512 and the expectation is that the successful candidate will join on the minimum of the CCC G7 pay band. 

We support a wide variety of working patterns such as compressed hours, hybrid working, part time hours, job sharing and flexi time. National pay bands may be used where staff apply to work from home for more than 60% of their working hours and live outside London. Regular attendance at our London office, for example for meetings and training, will still be required. The national pay band for this grade is£55,251-£62,467.

Additional notes

  • This role will require sometimes working outside of our standard hours. We have flexible working and ensure that staff can take time back.
  • Given the nature of the role, and the fact that it will include reactive media work, being able to reach various locations in London at short notice is important. This may require living within a reasonable travel distance to meet this demand efficiently.
