ONS operates a flexible hybrid working model across the UK, with colleagues linked to one of our contractual locations in Newport or Titchfield (Fareham)working between office and remote throughout the week.

As part of the hybrid working arrangement there is 40% a minimum office attendance requirement. Attendance is typically at your contractual office, with occasional travel to alternative locations.

We are looking for a DevSecOps Engineer (Development Security Operations Engineer) to join our active team of technical professionals, with a passion for Cloud technology to work within our AWS Team at ONS.

Job description

As a DevSecOps Engineer you will support the development and operation of software and infrastructure through tools, environments and practices.  

You will be responsible for underpinning good development processes, including managing tools and testing environments, central code control and maintaining development standards. 

Key Responsibilities

As a DevSecOps Engineer you will support the development of software and infrastructure components and processes that form part of our service delivery.  

You will:  

  • Transform technical requirements into DevSecOps processes  
  • Solve complex problems  
  • Manage production environments  
  • Identify and resolve issues with operational processes. 

General responsibilities are as follows: 

  • Designing, configuring and delivering applications and infrastructure as code to serve a variety of business process and user needs. 
  • Working in a DevSecOps environment to support and enhance existing applications and infrastructure including operational processes; including the implementation and use of monitoring, management information and reporting solutions. 
  • Ensuring best practice security principles such as ‘least privilege’ are continually adhered to and embedding ‘secure by design’ in all elements of your work; ensuring risks are identified and appropriate mitigation actions are implemented. 
  • Being a practitioner and advocate in the use of DevSecOps technologies, tools, and practices. 
  • Utilise knowledge of requirements including functional and others, such as performance, scalability, resilience and security to support the robust implementation and optimisation of business applications, demonstrating system functionality and performance through testing. 
  • Using Agile ways of working to identify and manage development tools and test environments, centralise code / configuration, CI/CD pipelines, maintain development standards and enhance automation. 
  • Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques; identifying and sharing good practices and collaborating to improve the capability of the team and wider Organisation. 
  • Providing coaching and mentoring to colleagues, ensuring continual improvement for the team and the wider organisation. 

Person specification

Essential Skills Criteria

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues supported by excellent communication and customer service experience. 
  • Experience of operating / administering Amazon Web Services, and an understanding of the security principles for Cloud infrastructure. 
  • Familiarity with using 'Infrastructure as Code' tools such as Terraform, GitHub and CI/CD pipelines such as Concourse. 
  • A good understanding of and practical ability to write code in a common programming language such as Python. 
  • Familiarity with data management and transformation tools such as Apache NiFi or Apache AirFlow.

Security Clearance 

The requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for 3 consecutive years immediately prior to applying.

A lack of UK residency in itself is not always a bar to security clearance but the Department will need to consider eligibility by exception on a case-by-case basis. You will be asked to provide information regarding your UK residency during your application, and failure to provide this will result in your application being rejected.

Stage 1 – Application & Sift Assessment

Assessment at application stage will be based on your CV, work history, skill and experience and personal statement. Your application should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the content of the role.

Your personal statement should be no longer than 1250 words. You should use this space to provide evidence for each essential criteria within the person specification. As the criteria are scored, we would recommend that you give clear examples for each including the impact of your actions and set them out using the STAR acronym (Situation, Task, Action, Result).  Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage. Sift stage will be based on your work history, skills and experience and evidence given in your personal statement.

Stage 2 – Interview
