The CMA’s Mergers team investigates UK qualifying mergers across all economic sectors, from retail shops to digital markets, helping to ensure that mergers do not substantially lessen competition and lead to worse market outcomes for UK consumers.

Job description
You will support the Mergers Directors in leading on either Phase 1 or Phase 2 merger control cases, helping to set the overall direction and strategy for a case and ensuring that decisions are robust and delivered in a timely and efficient manner.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading, motivating and managing multi-disciplinary professional teams, fostering effective and collaborative team working
- Overseeing and advising case teams on evidence analysis
- Developing and maintaining open, professional and proactive engagement with parties and other external stakeholders, often at very senior levels
As part of the Mergers management team, you will be involved in shaping the CMA’s mergers policy and practice. You will help to address the challenges raised by novel substantive and procedural issues in UK merger control, including those raised by mergers in digital markets and multi-jurisdictional cases.

- A proven track record of undertaking projects related to merger control or other competition/antitrust cases, as a lawyer, project delivery professional, or economist. (Lead Criteria)
- Significant experience of leading and developing staff and motivating professional teams in the delivery of successful projects (or work streams within projects).(Lead Criteria)
- Significant experience of making decisions, using sound analysis and judgement, taking account of the wider context.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to draft a range of documents for a wide variety of audiences.
- Strong experience of working collaboratively and building relationships internally and externally, including with senior decision-makers and stakeholders.

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.
The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review) and an interview, which includes a written exercise and presentation.
Please note that it is essential that your personal statement is aligned to provide evidence that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the essential selection criteria (as included on the role profile attached and listed above under 'Person Specification') in your application.
The closing date for applications is 23 September 2024 (11.55pm).
We cannot accept applications submitted after the closing date and time.
The sift will take place from 23 to 27 September 2024.
Interviews are planned to take place from 11 October onwards. Those invited to interview will be asked to complete a written exercise and prepare a short presentation, details of which will be provided in advance of the interview.
The interview will be a 1 hour panel interview, beginning with your presentation. You will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Technical and Experience elements outlined in the role profile.
Interviews will take place at a CMA office or via MS teams.
