This role combines learning and practical on the job training. At the end of it all, you'll have a level 3 Paralegal qualification. You’ll be fully supported to meet the learning requirements of the qualification.

The apprenticeship will be delivered by Damar Training. Paralegal Apprenticeships. This apprenticeship is due to start in March 2025 and we will be looking to onboard successful applicants in February 2025.

Job description

The main purpose of the Level 3 Paralegal is to prepare accurate information and related documentation for DVSA prosecution cases to be presented at court, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.

You are also responsible for quality assuring  paperwork and liaise with courts and internal/external customers regarding cases/dates, ensuring that deadlines are met.

You will also deliver back-office support to the Roadside Enforcement fixed penalties activities of DVSA.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Process and action regular reports, including generating and sending appropriate letters and proformas.
  • Accept receipt of new prosecution cases submitted via an IT system, quality assure case papers for consistency and required evidence, reject and return case papers of an inferior quality.
  • Prepare accurate summonses or postal charges and related documentation for cases to be presented at court.
  • Manage individual case load on a daily basis by using IT diaries to ensure that legislative deadlines are met as well as internal and external SLA’s.
  • Liaise with contracted solicitors and DVSA enforcement staff with respect to specific cases and appoint legal representation in the event of an appeal against a court decision.
  • Book hearing dates at specified Magistrates’ Courts, liaising between courts and DVSA staff.

Person specification

We are seeking an individual who can pick up new skills with ease, being able to organise your time effectively and balance your work and studies.

To be successful in this post you will have a good level of computer literacy including experience of Microsoft Word and Excel in particular.

You will have the ability to organise and plan your own workload.

You will possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to communicate with people at all levels highlighting any issues you find whilst having a high level of attention to detail. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must hold or be willing to complete Maths and English GCSE Grade 4 above, or willing to complete this before the end of the apprenticeship. 
  • Have the right work in the UK.
  • Not be in full-time education.
  • Not be in receipt of funding for other learning programmes at the point of enrolment for this apprenticeship.
  • Have valid and eligible residency status and be resident in the UK for 3 years before the start of the apprenticeship. Full eligibility details can be found here at Annex A. If you are not sure if you meet the residency requirements then please contact us before applying. 

If you currently hold or are working towards a similar qualification of the same level or higher i.e. L3 Paralegal qualification, then you will not be eligible to apply for this vacancy.

In order to be eligible for our apprenticeship vacancy, any qualifications previously held or currently being worked towards must differ in content so that this apprenticeship provides substantial new skills.

Additional Information

We operate a hybrid working model giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work. Our expectation is that you will spend a minimum 60% of your time at your base location. Visits to other DVSA sites or work locations count towards this.

Please take note that DVSA does not hold a UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker License sponsor and are unable to sponsor any individuals for Skilled Worker Sponsorship. 

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement, for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.

This role is a Fixed Term appointment for a maximum length of 24 months, there will be a possibility of becoming a permanent Prosecution & Legal Services Case Officer once the apprenticeship has been completed.
