Job summary
You will work in a small team as a Civilian Medical Practitioner within RAF Recruiting and Selection, providing Occupational Medicine opinions for RAF general service entry and fitness for Aircrew and Controller Selection.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Evidence of Immunity to Hep B is required.
Job description
- Undertake Tri-Service Initial Aviation Medical Examinations to make decisions on medical fitness for safety critical aircrew and aircraft controller roles, taking into account the air safety standards published in AP1269A.
- Remote initial certification of candidates and serving personnel employed in air safety critical roles through the review of medical records provided by the Contractor, military medical officers and civilian medical practitioners.
- Provide advice to the Contractor staff on the Medical Fitness of candidates referred by them. This includes Single Service Occupational Health Opinions (SSOH), candidate enquiries and appeals, and advice to the executive on Medical risk.
- Provide remote occupational assessments of medical fitness to continue in military training.

Person specification
Essential:
- Registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) both on the main register and on the GMC GP Register without Restrictions.
- A current, satisfactory in date annual appraisal in line with the requirements of the General Medical Council’s (GMC’s) Good Medical Practice (GMP).
Desirable:
- Previous experience working with the Ministry of Defence (MOD).
- Appropriate clinical skills and experience to provide medical oversight.
- Good people skills, including the ability to form strong working relationships with colleagues in the Recruiting & Selection Department of Occupational Medicine, wider military, and non-military partners.
- A proven history of working collaboratively within teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A commitment to undertake continuing professional development throughout their career.
- RAF Military Aviation Medicine Examiner (MAME) Course.
- Diploma in Aviation Medicine.
- Diploma in Occupational Medicine.

Additional Information
There will be no reimbursement for any travel expenses for the interview. All employees who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a 6-month probation period (unless otherwise advised) effective from the employment start date.
