ONS operates a flexible hybrid working model across the UK, with colleagues linked to one of our contractual locations in Newport orTitchfield (Fareham)working between office and remote throughout the week.

As part of the hybrid working arrangement there is a 40% minimum office attendance requirement. Attendance is typically at your contractual office, with occasional travel to alternative locations.

The Office for National Statistics is the UK's largest producer of official statistics in the UK, and the only government department with the production of statistics as its main role. 

The Publishing team is the conduit for everything published on the ONS website – templating statistical outputs, building pages in the Content Management System (CMS), managing changes to content, keeping landing pages up to date and ensuring that everything we do meets our style standards. The team publishes high-profile content on a daily basis.

Job description

As Publishing Officer, you will support the organisation by publishing content to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website using our Content Management System (CMS).  

You’ll work with statistical output areas across the organisation to make sure that their content is published on time and to the highest standards. You’ll be passionate about doing things well, representing the needs of our users, and finding ways to do things better. 

Working to support the publication of different types of statistical content, you’ll need an excellent eye for detail. You should be comfortable using digital tools and will have good communication skills.  

You’ll have training to use our systems and support from a large team of publishing officers.  

Main responsibilities 

  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team of Publishing Officers and Content Designers to publish content to the ONS website. 
  • Build statistical publications in the CMS, applying relevant standards and ensuring content is of a high quality. 
  • Develop a good understanding and awareness of Content Style Guide and accessibility standards. Keep up to date with changes to best practice.  
  • Develop strong relationships with statistical output areas and work with them collaboratively to ensure all publications are delivered in accordance with the Code of Practice for Statistics. 
  • Advise teams on the best ways to communicate their content using the website products we offer and the skills our team can provide.  
  • Set up and contribute to pre and post publication meetings with output teams.  
  • Respond to queries from statistical output areas and other stakeholders through a shared inbox. 
  • Provide support to output areas within Service Level agreement (SLA) hours 08.00 to 16.30, while preparing publications. Occasionally, you will also be expected to provide late cover until 18.00 or early publication cover from 06.45am.

  • Proven organisational and prioritisation skills, and evidence of working to tight deadlines.  
  • Comfortable using digital tools, good IT skills.  
  • Ability to identify problems and suggest appropriate solutions. 
  • Can demonstrate ability to follow guidance and standards.

Individuals appointed to the Office for National Statistics or UK Statistics Authority will be subject to National Security Vetting at “SC Cleared” level for this post.
