Job summary

The SIA have a statutory responsibility to license Individual security operatives, as well as operating a voluntary scheme for organisations who supply such operatives. Individual licence decisions are increasingly complicated as we continue to make greater use of our non-conviction information criteria, taking account of evidence such as CCTV footage and other public body investigations, in addition to criminal records. 

To help us face the challenge of an increasingly complex workload we have created a new post to lead resolution of applications and status reviews for complex individual licence cases, support training of all Decisions area specialists, ensure clarity and effectiveness of Decisions area guidance and processes

Job description

What you will be doing:

  • Individual licence guidance and processes for Decisions staff – lead all of the specialists in Decisions area to review guidance promptly at scheduled date to ensure its continued clarity, accuracy and fitness for purpose. 
  • Licensing criteria – lead on clarifications and enhancements to the SIA’s criteria working together with relevant specialists, policy and legal advisors.  
  • Training and development – identify development areas for all specialists in Decisions area and arrange relevant training.
  • Non-conviction information process – assess recommendations from Decisions Officers (in place of a Decisions Manager or Senior Decisions Manager), advise on drafts of complex decision letters liaising with Legal Services where appropriate. 
  • Further Information Requests – review and approve the sending of formal requests for information from partners, ensuring compliance with GDPR. 
  • Issue resolution – take the lead in ad hoc issues or projects affecting business delivery in Licensing & Service Delivery.
  • Communication – pro-actively share knowledge within L&SD and across wider organisation about work of Decisions area, including arranging in-person and on-line events.

Person specification

What skills are we looking for?

  • Experience of casework or similar type of function involving the need for impartial decision making.
  • Proven knowledge of understanding policies and procedures in relation to making regulatory decisions.
  • Capable of prioritising workflows in order to meet targets and achieve results. 
  • Demonstrable ability to act under own initiative and constantly strive to deliver excellence in work. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and a capacity to work with a wide range of people, as well as excellent team working skills.
  • An understanding of, or experience in, a regulatory body or public sector processes. 

It would be great if you have experience in these areas:

  • Experience of attending court as a witness or representative for either a private or public sector body. 
  • Experience of providing advice / briefings directly to Senior Management / Directors / Board members.
