The group ensures the best evidence and analysis are used to address the strategic issues facing the department. We also provide the science, technology, data, and international insights and collaboration capabilities to drive delivery.

Part of the Home Office Analysis & Insight directorate, the Performance Reporting & Analysis Unit (PRAU) provides reporting and analysis of performance for the Migration & Borders (M&B) Mission and associated operational Capabilities. We support Ministers, the Executive Committee, Policy and Operational leads and other analytical functions with management information (MI), as well as producing data for publication and external release.

The successful candidate will join the M&B Performance Team within PRAU, supporting the Second Permanent Secretary and Directors-General (DG) across the M&B Mission in managing its performance and accounting for the performance of the Mission to third parties. As such, your work will be visible at senior levels within the Department, and you will gain a strategic perspective across the whole of the M&B Mission and its activities.

Job description

The role involves ensuring regular reports and dashboards are timely, accurate, and relevant, and they reflect best practice in presenting performance information. You need to be able to highlight the right issues and support productive conversations about performance. 

You will also have responsibility for the publication of performance related data on gov.uk and ensuring that any published data follows the principles of the Code of Practice for Statistics. 

A key element of the role is gathering the right performance information and insight needed to produce high quality performance reports. It also requires you to develop a good working knowledge of the diverse range of business across the M&B mission.  Training and support on our methods and tooling will be provided.

Key responsibilities

1. Producing regular (typically weekly and monthly) cross-system performance reports covering the key work areas in M&B, covering key performance indicators for this part of the Department. 
 
2. Supporting the M&B Board and sub-groups to the Board to understand and manage the performance of the mission. 
 
3. Ensuring the publication of a high-quality, quarterly release of transparency data on the performance of the mission, working with data providers from across PRAU and in other areas. 
 
4. Undertaking (data) analysis into cross-M&B performance issues, seeking to develop new datasets and new insight from our data to help the mission understand and tackle challenges. 
 
5. Working with the teams elsewhere in PRAU, with the Home Office Delivery Unit, and with performance teams in each M&B Capability to ensure there is a coherent, single picture of the performance of the mission presented to senior officials, Ministers and externally.  

6. Leading on the development of strategic-level M&B and HO Wide performance dashboards in the Department’s developing Power BI-based management information system, working with other teams in PRAU/M&B/HO as needed.

Working pattern

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of compressed hours working This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work 4 days per week due to business requirements.

Travel

The post holder will need to agree a base location of either Croydon, Sheffield or Liverpool with a requirement for periodic attendance at other Home Office locations, such as 2 Marsham Street, London, on a quarterly basis.

Person specification

Essential criteria

    •    Experience in presenting data and information clearly using an appropriate style, taking into account the needs of the intended audience. 

    •    Strong numerical skills and experience in data analysis, data manipulation and data processing, including strong experience of working with Microsoft Excel as a minimum. 

    •    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely through written reports and verbal presentations – taking into account the needs of the intended audience. 

    •    Strong team player, acting corporately and always looking for ways to improve how things are done. 

    •    Used to working under pressure; able to work flexibly and maintain high quality outputs, and remain focused even when things don’t go smoothly.

    •    Experience of developing and maintaining strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels throughout the Home Office.

    •    Excellent organisational skills, a good planner and manager of own work. 

    Desirable criteria

    •    Experience in the publication of data. 

    •    Experience in data visualisation and dashboard design, particularly using Microsoft PowerBI.

    Selection process details

    3. Sift – week commencing 25th November 2024

    The sift will be held on the CV, Personal Statement and Behaviour Making Effective Decisions.

    Should a high volume of applications be received, an initial sift will be conducted on the Personal Statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will then be progressed to a full sift that will consist of the Behaviour Making Effective Decisions and CV.

    Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the Personal Statement will not have their Behaviour or CV scored and will only receive a sift score for the Personal Statement.
