About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
Job description
The Role
As an Infrastructure Field Engineer at MI5, you’ll support your team to retrieve data from large and complex networks. This will include assisting your colleagues with the design and implementation of bespoke solutions so we can continue to grow our operations. Day to day, this could involve installing, configuring and managing remote infrastructure such as firewalls, routers, switches and servers, through to the administration of a multi-vendor environment. You could be investigating and troubleshooting technical issues (occasionally travelling to UK and overseas sites) and assisting with the development and implementation of automation systems.
You’ll also help us to maintain our ability to continuously deliver on a high volume of competing requirements from across mission areas and assisting the work of MI6 and GCHQ.
The team supports MI5’s mission by designing, installing and maintaining solutions to gather intelligence against the organisation’s most technically aware target sets. This means you’ll be working across several exciting areas as part of a growing team, so being able to build strong relationships across our agencies, and with external partners, is integral.
While your main focus will involve team projects, you’ll also get the chance to take on individual technical project work of interest, as long as it directly relates to your team’s remit. Upon completion of all relevant training, you’ll have the opportunity to join an on-call rota. There is also regular work outside of core hours, including weekends and evenings which can be claimed as overtime or taken as time off in lieu. This work is optional.
Person specification
About You
As well as having a keen interest in cyber and global datacentre interconnection, a foundation in network engineering is essential. As is an interest in coding and network configuration in any GNL/Linux-based system. You’ll also have experience in a technical role in the industry and be comfortable explaining technical concepts related to internet infrastructure to non-technical audiences.
You’ll be working in a multi-disciplined team and maintaining relationships with varied stakeholders. So, your teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills will be invaluable. You should also be able to carry out the physical requirements of this role, which may include carrying and moving equipment. Above all, you’ll be enthusiastic about developing the skills necessary to fulfil the role and developing personally.
Benefits
Training and Development
When you join us at MI5, you’ll receive an organisation-wide Induction Roadmap and have the opportunity to meet with key partners, customers, and stakeholders to understand how your team helps the organisation meet its wider goals. You’ll also be assigned a buddy who will help you get settled in.
Within your role, you’ll work with colleagues in industry, often at the cutting edge of research and development of new technologies. We run a multi-vendor network, giving you the opportunity to develop your technical skills on the Juniper and Arista certification tracks. Or you may want to focus on Linux, and we will support you to study towards Red Hat certifications.
At every turn, you’ll be encouraged to complete technical training that will ensure your skills are kept sharp and up to date, including support to achieve professional qualifications. Plus, we offer multiple training courses that will help you develop over the course of your career, with a particular focus on core technical skills, management and leadership, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
We encourage all our technical specialists to join the Cyber Technical Framework (CTF). This has been developed to assess your knowledge, skills and attributes, while providing support to progress and grow as a leader with deep technical abilities.
