Job description
We are looking to recruit Immigration Officers to join our frontline Immigration Compliance and Enforcement (ICE) team.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop and embed a wide range of people and engagement skills, in a job where you can make a real difference.
If successful, you will be required to attend and pass a medical examination; this will involve travel for which costs are not covered.
This is a demanding operational role, requiring personal resilience and integrity. Our officers need to be able to respond to challenges in a calm and professional manner.
Training
You will receive full training and support to do the job. Training takes place initially in the classroom and then continues on the job with a mentor who supports you until you are fully confident in the role. Even then you are never alone; you work as part of a team where there is always someone around for advice and support. Further information on what the training involves can be found on our website.
Working Pattern
Successful candidates will need to be able to attend for all shifts including early starts, late finishes, overnight shifts, weekends and public holidays. Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis.
Key Responsibilities
Your day-to-day work could include (but is not limited to) the following:
• Identifying, arresting, and detaining immigration offenders, Protecting, and safeguarding the vulnerable
• Engaging with communities and partner agencies across government, Demonstrating a genuine interest in people through an inquisitive, open mind and empathy.
• Completing property and person searches including collecting, preserving, and recording evidence. Conducting residential and commercial compliance & enforcement visits
• Escorting of immigration offenders to Overseas and UK based locations and can include short term stays abroad or in other UK locations.
• Gathering intelligence, completing risk assessments, driving official vehicles, conducting database checks and closely examining documents
• Directing officers whilst on an enforcement visit and conducting Briefings/De-Briefings, Writing reports and inputting data on internal systems and handheld devices

Essential criteria
- Good verbal and written communication to be able to draft witness statements, court reports and engage with the public.
- Good decision-making skills – Able to make difficult decisions when they are needed. Gathering information from various sources to make a reasoned assessment and justifying their recommendation both verbally and in writing.
- An excellent team spirit - working as part of a team, with excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills.
- Personal resilience in dealing with challenging and conflicting situations with professionalism, honesty & integrity.
- Self-motivation and the ability to be flexible, adaptable, and creative in solving problems and dealing with demanding situations.

Selection process details
This gives us the best possible chance of finding the right person for the job, drives up performance and improves diversity and inclusivity.
We will endeavour to conduct the selection process in line with the dates indicated below, but cannot guarantee that these will not, where necessary, be revised.
As part of the application process, you will first be asked to confirm your eligibility by providing some basic personal information.
After submission of this first stage, you will be invited to complete the Civil Service Work Strengths test.
1. Online Test – by 17th October 2024
If you successfully pass the Civil Service Work Strengths test, you will be invited to complete the full application form. Please complete the online test as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended). If you fail to complete the online test or full application before the deadline, your application will be withdrawn.
Guidance for the Civil Service test will be available when you are invited to take the test. The tests are administered online and accessed via the Civil Service Jobs website.
You cannot complete the test on a mobile phone or tablet.
Following successful completion of your test, you will then be asked to complete the full application form.
2. Application – by 17th October 2024
As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete:
- a Personal Statement (maximum 500 words)
- provide evidence of the behaviour - Making Effective Decisions (250 words maximum)
The Personal Statement should be aligned to and demonstrate how you meet the skills and experience set out in the essential criteria, detailed in the job description.

3. Sift – week commencing 21st October 2024
The sift will be held on the Personal Statement and Lead Behaviour - Making Effective Decisions.
Should a high volume of applications be received, the sift will be conducted on the Personal Statement only.
The Personal Statement will be scored for all candidates. Those who achieve the minimum pass score for the Personal Statement, will progress to a full sift where the lead behaviour – Making Effective Decisions, will be scored. These candidates will therefore receive a sift score for all elements. Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the Personal statement will not have their behaviour scored and will therefore only receive a sift score for the Personal Statement.
4. Interviews – week commencing 11th November 2024
If you are successful at sift stage, you will be invited to an interview that will be:
- Behaviours (as listed in the job advert) and Strength-based questions.
The interview will take place in person in Cardiff.
Reserve List
A reserve list may be held for a period of up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made. There is no guarantee that being held on a reserve list will lead to a job offer. Further information can be found on our website.
Candidates judged to be a near miss at interview may be offered a post at the grade below the one advertised without the need to go through a further selection process, providing the role has the same Success Profiles elements and essential skills. There is no guarantee that further such vacancies will arise.
