Job summary
Working as part of a flexible development team, this role is to design and develop complex software solutions for varied customers, utilising the existing software development tools in use within the group. You will be involved in numerous deliveries spanning the Cefas tech-stack and across the software development teams.

Job description
The Software & Research Engineering (SRE) group continues to provide complex software solutions to our customers and colleagues. Current systems are being developed primarily in C#.NET, Blazor and SQL Server, under an Agile development process to deliver cloud agnostic solutions. Emphasis is also given to GIS developments and open-source technologies to enable the group to support new and existing systems as well as move into new business areas.
Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- The analysis of customer requirements as part of a delivery team;
- The design and development of new software; and
- The support and maintenance of existing software under an accredited quality system.
In addition, Cefas reserves the right to ask staff to take on additional duties and responsibilities which are commensurate with their grade. Team Leaders and management will have a discussion with staff to explain the changes that are to be made. A new job description will be issued if required.
Person specification
The following are essential criteria required for this role and you must be able to demonstrate your skills and experience in the following areas:
- Applicants must have high level analytical skills, including the ability to capture and document customer requirements;
- Relevant and recent experience of customer interaction and negotiation to capture requirements is required;
- Working as part of a team within an Agile development methodology;
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to work under pressure and be able to organise yourself to meet fast-paced deadlines;
- Motivation to deliver high quality services and products to customers within agreed timescales; and
- Have a flexible approach to work;
- Academic qualifications and experience required for direct entry into this Cefas Pay Band 5 role is a degree (or equivalent qualification), specifically in software development/computer science. Equivalent relevant work experience and being able to demonstrate meeting all criteria listed above in this person specification will be accepted.
The successful candidate will also be involved in on-call activities and may also be required to work off-site at times.

Sift

Interview

Location
As part of the pre-employment process for this post, successful candidate(s) will be able to agree a contractual workplace from those locations listed in this advert. The agreed contractual workplace is then the substantive and permanent place of work for the successful candidate(s)
Where the location is ‘National’ the successful appointee should discuss and agree an appropriate contractual location in line with both Defra’s location policy and site capacity, prior to proceeding with pre-employment processes.
Successful applicants currently employed by the hiring Defra organisation for this post may choose to remain in their current contractual location or may choose to change contractual location to one of those listed above. The agreed amount of time spent at a workplace for this post will reflect the requirement for Civil Servants to spend at least 60% of their working time in an organisation workplace with the option to work the remaining time flexibly from home. Working time spent at a workplace may include time spent at other organisational locations including field-based operational locations, together with supplier, customer or partner locations. This is a non-contractual agreement which is consistent with common Civil Service expectations.
Travel costs to non-contractual workplaces will be subject to departmental travel and subsistence policies. Travel costs to contractual workplaces are the responsibility of the employee.
The successful candidate is required to carry out all their duties from a UK location, and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time.
