Job summary

The FSA is a small government department with a big mission: to keep food safe, ensure that it is what it says it is, and that it’s increasingly healthy and more sustainable. In our work to deliver on this promise, our organisation undertakes many external contracts. These contracts support broad areas of our work, from inspections to scientific research.

We have an opportunity for a Commercial Category Manager who can help lead their team through the procurement cycle for their specific area of the business, ensuring that the FSA s supported with the people and contracts that we need to continue building upon the great work of the FSA.

Job description

You’ll develop strategies and plans for your category, lead on major tender exercises and develop and maintain key relationships with stakeholders. Managing tender processes from end to end, you’ll ensure that our contracts are as successful as possible. You will be part of a team effort to understand the changes and benefit from the opportunities offered by the new Procurement Act 2023.

This rich and varied role will see you building relationships with a wide range of individuals. You’ll work with contract managers, commercial business partners and our directorial community to ensure that the FSA is always in the best position to deliver its important work.

Essential criteria

Experience

  • Lead criteria: Proven experience in implementing procurement processes and policies, including the management of sourcing and tendering exercises.
  • Proven relevant commercial management experience including overseeing a pipeline of expenditure and demonstrable evidence-based decision making.
  • Proven ability to develop stakeholder relationships, engaging in meaningful and constructive conversations in order to be able to challenge and influence when necessary.
  • Proven experience of applying structured Continuous Improvement approaches to deliver service improvements and/or solutions to business issues.

Lead criteria

An initial sift will take place on the Lead Criteria.

In the event we receive a large number of applications, the minimum pass mark for the Lead Criteria may be raised at shortlisting stage. Candidates who apply under the DCS, GPTW or RIS schemes and meet the minimum requirement will be unaffected by the pass mark raise.

Interview

If successful at shortlisting stage, you will be invited to a final interview in which we will assess you against the following Experience requirements of the role and Civil Service Behaviours Level 3.

Assessment exercise
