The role can be based in Alice Holt Research Station, Farnham GU10 4LH or in Northern Research Station, Roslin, Midlothian EH25 9SY with blended working which gives you the option to work some of the week from home, and some of the week from the workplace. The Finance Team is responsible for providing effective financial systems and support within FR. This incorporates, strategic corporate and financial planning, management and financial accounting reporting and control, risk management, systems accounting, transaction processing, and procurement advice.


Reporting to the Finance Support Officer (FSO), the postholder will have the opportunity to be part of the finance team working in the budgeting and forecasting function, interfacing with a variety of different functional and science based teams across FR.

Job description

Working as part of a cross-location team, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the FBP and FSO in maintaining the annual budgeting cycle to deliver a high quality, customer focused support service to FR.

Key Work Areas:

•    Supporting the FSO in maintaining the budgeting cycle, including arranging and participating in budget meetings with project managers and cost centre managers
•    Assisting in the review of budget and forecast submissions, ensuring data integrity, checking users have input data correctly, and report findings to the Finance Business Partner

•    Issuing monthly project reports, reviewing project balances, collating commentary to and from budget holders
•    Data analysis, interrogating the ledgers of FR’s enterprise resource and planning (ERP) system, Business World (BW) and investigating the system for supporting evidence, especially during mid-year and end of year Audits  
•    Resolving any transactional coding errors by manual posting of correction journals, throughout the financial year.
•    Assisting the FBP and FSO in the continuous development of the Project Management module in BW

Person specification

 Essential Criteria:

•    Previous experience of working in a similar role, including reconciling and processing financial transactions with accuracy 
•    Good working knowledge of Excel
•    Attention to detail with strong numerical and analytical skills
•    Basic understanding of MS Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
•    Organisation skills, with the ability to prioritise and proactively manage workload
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of using Unit4 Business World (previously known as Agresso), or other ERP platform
  • An understanding of SharePoint & Teams
