Job summary

Never has there been a more important time for trees and forests to help tackle the climate emergency and provide a much-needed sanctuary for people and wildlife. We aim to at least treble tree planting rates in England by the end of this Parliament, reflecting England’s contribution to meeting the UK’s overall target of planting 30,000 hectares per year by the end of this Parliament. This acceleration in current planting rates in England will contribute to meeting the net-zero by 2050 ambitions, and to government’s wider environmental targets.

Forest Services, as part of Forestry Commission, are the Government’s forestry experts. We advise nationally and locally on how to unlock the full potential of woodlands and support the forestry sector to protect, improve and expand England’s valuable woodland assets, ensuring that they continue to provide benefits to people, the environment and the economy.

This role is part of Forest Services’ Incentives Development Team, which has responsibility for the development and continuous improvement of a range of grants that aim to achieve our ambitions for protecting current woodland resource, woodland expansion and more tree planting. The role will be focused on delivery of the Tree Health Pilot.

Job description

In this role you will be helping to ensure that Forestry Commission delivered grants are designed to be attractive to land managers, deliver Government Policy and ensure that they comply with the Government Functional Standards.

The purpose of this role is to manage projects and tasks contributing to the detailed design and improvement of incentives that are delivered by the Forestry Commission. This work will consider how the incentives can support policy objectives, comply with Government grant standards and operational delivery.

Key work areas

Contribute to the detailed design of one or more incentives that are or will be delivered by the Forestry Commission by managing key development projects.

Work with stakeholders to ensure the grants are effective and work with Compliance colleagues to ensure they comply with Government standards for grant delivery.

Line manage and direct the work of at least one Project Officer, and be responsible for the recruitment into the wider team as required.

Work closely with colleagues involved in the management and development of other incentives, including to share/build lessons learned.

Act as a point of escalation for complex enquiries and novel or challenging casework matters as they arise.

Undertake approvals of grant applications and claims.

Quality assure the information used by senior managers for reporting against programme and government targets.

 Any FC parent, office, subject to office capacity. Regular (monthly) attendance at the FC’s Bristol Office will be expected.

Person specification

With demonstrable experience of working professionally in or with the land management sector, you will have:

  1. Experience of working with internal and external stakeholders
  2. A proven track record of managing and delivering multiple projects to challenging timescales
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. People management experience
  5. Experience of using the MS Office suite of applications to deliver tasks
  6. Experience of designing and communicating new/modified processes to different audiences, or a demonstrable ability to do so

Desirable:

  1. Degree-level or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  2. Experience of incentive management and/or design
  3. Experience of advising on Tree Health issues/ woodland creation/management, or of managing these activities directly

Selection process details

This is a 0.5 x Fixed Term Appointment until 31st March 2026 with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.
