Job summary

We’re seeking an experienced and enthusiastic communicator to fill an integral role in the Science Communications & Engagement team at RBG Kew. Through connecting a vibrant, diverse science directorate of ~530 staff and increasing its scientific reputation on the world stage, you’ll be part of a team seeking to realise Kew’s goal of understanding and protecting plants and fungi for the well-being of people and the future of all life on Earth.

In this role you will work with the Science Communications team as well as a broader cohort of expert communicators at Kew, to deliver and help shape a strong, dynamic external science communications portfolio that increases Kew’s scientific reputation among major stakeholder groups, and fosters deep engagement with its research and open access scientific resources.

Job description

Utilising your rich history of working in scientific organisations and forming close relationships with practicing researchers, conservationists and science staff, you will reach out across the organisation to identify key science stories and craft content that delivers real impact towards Kew’s Science Strategy and Manifesto for Change.

You will utilise your skills in digital content creation and social media management to promote Kew’s scientific research across our external channels and maintain an up-to-date calendar of scheduled material and opportunities. Your eye for detail and passion for analytical tools will prove crucial in assessing the reach and engagement of the outputs you produce, and subsequently drawing conclusions and implementing learnings.

Person specification

In this particularly exciting time to join the Science Communications & Engagement team, you will work closely with the Communications & Engagement Manager to shape a new long-term science communications plan, contribute to major campaigns, and rise to new opportunities and challenges as global digital platforms change. You will also utilise your problem-solving and decision-making skillset as you support the Digitisation Project Communications Officer in their delivery of the project’s communications strategy.

Overall, you will work on internal and external communications outputs that reflect the incredible diversity of Kew’s research, the species and ecosystems under its care, and the people that make up Kew and its many partners.

Interviews will take place in November 2024

This role is based at Kew with the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.

Our fantastic benefits package includes opportunities for continuous learning, a generous annual leave entitlement, flexible working to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance, an Employee Assistance Programme and other wellbeing support such as cycle to work scheme and discounted gym membership. We also offer a competitive pension, an employee discount scheme and free entry into a wide range of national museums and galleries, as well as access to our own beautiful gardens at Kew and Wakehurst.
