GDS exists to help government make brilliant public services that empower people in the UK. We work at the very centre of government to drive digital transformation, focused on users. We build and maintain common platforms, products and tools for others to use and create great public services that are accessible, inclusive and easy to use. This role is on the GOV.UK programme, which is part of the Government Digital Service (GDS). GOV.UK is the groundbreaking single website for the UK government with 1.4 billion visits in 2022. Our mission is to make it simple for everyone to interact with government.
Junior content designers work on our content design teams, which work with departments across government to develop and maintain some of the most-used content on GOV.UK that helps people find information and complete essential tasks. You’ll be joining a thriving community of content designers in GDS and across government, with lots of opportunities to gain new skills and get advice and support from other content professionals. When you start, you’ll go through a comprehensive induction programme covering ways of working, how to publish on GOV.UK and how to respond to common requests from government and public users.
Job description
As a junior content designer on GOV.UK, you’ll be joining a team of experienced content designers and senior content designers. You will:
- work with other junior content designers to respond to queries and requests to update content that come in from the public and government
- create, iterate and manage user-centred content using analytics, user feedback, user research and other sources of information, as well as contributing to content principles, improvements and patterns
- collaborate effectively with relevant stakeholders, making sure appropriate policy and legal checks within other parts of government happen, and that content is published quickly and efficiently
- contribute to the GDS content community and the cross-government content community
Person specification
We’re interested in people with skills and experience in:
- content design - you must have experience of creating, iterating and managing user-centred content
- using insights and analytics - you should know how to use analytics, user feedback, user research or other sources of information to make decisions about content and how to improve it
- prioritisation - you must have the ability to co-ordinate a number of projects simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities, and work to tight deadlines under pressure
- stakeholder management - you should know how to work with stakeholders and clients to understand their issues while maintaining content quality
- content publishing tools - you must have experience of using content publishing tools to publish content online

GDS offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home and also spends some time in their local office. You’ll agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.

Selection process details
The standard selection process for roles at GDS consists of:
- Application stage - CV and 2 application questions. As part of your application, you’ll be asked to submit an anonymised CV demonstrating your previous work history. It is essential that your CV meets the skills and experience listed in the person specification above. You will also need to answer 2 application questions based on the person's specifications. Please note you will have a limit of up to 300 words per question which must be followed. Failure to submit your CV and complete the application questions may result in your application being unsuccessful.
- Test stage - You will be sent a task to be completed remotely within 1 week.
- Video interview stage - The video Interview will be no more than 60 minutes.
Whilst we value the use of AI technology to enhance our daily work, we also value the personal touch and urge applicants to write responses without the use of AI to emphasise their own unique experiences.
Depending on how many applications we get, there might also be an extra stage before the video interview, for example a phone interview or a technical exercise.

Candidates that do not pass the interview but have demonstrated an acceptable standard may be considered for similar roles at a lower grade.
A reserve list will be held for a period of 12 months, from which further appointments can be made.

This move is to bring together the digital transformation of public services into one core department. The move itself will offer huge opportunities whilst allowing DSIT to lead the way and drive forward the new Government's digital agenda.
