Job summary

Ofwat is seeking a proactive and eager-to-learn Cloud Engineer to assist in managing and maintaining both cloud and on-premises infrastructure. You'll play a fundamental role by ensuring our cloud infrastructure is effective and continually improving, ensuring Ofwat's people have the right capabilities and tools to deliver for customers, society, and the environment.  

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of cloud technologies and enterprise IT infrastructure. You will work closely with senior engineers, developers, and DevOps teams to support, monitor, and maintain infrastructure services, both cloud and on-premises. You will be exposed to a range of technologies such as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Microsoft Server, Linux Red Hat, VMware, and HP ProLiant servers. The role requires basic knowledge of Microsoft Azure, including Azure Blob Storage, Entra (Azure Active Directory), on-premises Active Directory, and Microsoft 365 (M365) administration.

Job description

In this role you will be expected to cover the following areas:

Cloud and M365 Administration:

  • Assist in managing and maintaining Microsoft Azure cloud environments, including Azure Blob Storage and Entra (Azure Active Directory).
  • Help administer Microsoft 365 (M365) services, including Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Support the deployment and management of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on Azure.
  • Assist with Intune and Autopilot for device management, configuration, and deployment.

On-Premises Infrastructure:

  • Support the maintenance and administration of on-premises Active Directory, including user account management and group policies.
  • Help manage VMware virtualised environments and HP ProLiant servers.
  • Assist in ensuring the security, performance, and reliability of on-premises servers and infrastructure.
  • Participate in monitoring system health and troubleshooting issues as they arise.

Networking:

  • Assist in monitoring and managing on-premises networking infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Help troubleshoot basic networking issues in coordination with senior engineers.

Collaboration with Senior Engineers & DevOps Teams:

  • Work closely with senior engineers to support and maintain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices.
  • Collaborate with developers and DevOps teams to help optimise cloud and on-premises environments for performance and reliability.

Security & Compliance:

  • Support the implementation of security best practices in cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with organisational security standards, including managing identity and access controls.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will need the below essential experience, skills, knowledge and attributes:

Experience, skills and knowledge 

  1. Lead criterion: 1-2 years of experience in cloud engineering, system administration or IT support.
  2. Lead criterion: Some experience and understanding of Microsoft Azure cloud services.
  3. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 (M365) administration, including Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams.
  4. Knowledge of Active Directory, including user account management.
  5. Some experience with Windows Server environments.
  6. Interest in Linux Red Hat or other Linux-based operating systems.
  7. Basic networking knowledge, including understanding of VLANs, firewalls, and VPNs.
  8. Willingness to learn and grow in a collaborative team environment.
  9. Basic scripting skills in PowerShell or Bash.
  10. Familiarity with Microsoft Intune and Autopilot for device management.
