Job description
The DVLA deliver wide reaching digital services to the UK public and industry. Our customers now have more online services to choose from than ever before and reach over 50 million people a year.
Lead interaction designers will champion accessibility and inclusion, consider the impact of new technologies and ensure designs meet legal requirements As advocates for user centred design, they are comfortable in talking about their work with wider audiences.
A lead interaction designer is an expert practitioner who influences and mentors others. They work with service managers and programme directors to develop design concepts. They set direction, assure the quality of design delivery across teams and can lead multiple or highly complex services, and deliver best-in-class customer service in a people focused environment that champions Recognition, Involvement, Development and Support for all.
We are growing our team, and you will have the opportunity to be involved in the recruitment and team process to further improve interaction design at DVLA.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead a team of interaction designers and senior interaction designers to support the development of services by mentoring, coaching and providing recommendations and decisions on design solutions.
- Influence people to ensure design standards are understood and upheld and to represent the user in discussions and in design outputs.
- Lead a team to deliver designs through effective stakeholder engagement, strong user focus and a user centered design approach.
- Set the design standards for user experience of digital services ensuring these adhere to Agency, Government and Worldwide accessibility standards as needed and that key elements are built in from the outset, and represent interaction design at government service assessments.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships between internal and external stakeholders. Communicate credibly with a wide range of technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Contribute to / implement policy, process and external improvements.
- Adhere to Health & Safety Policies, Data Protection, Security Policies and understand relevant employment law.

To thrive in this role:
- You will have design knowledge developed from either a design related degree or experience working as a digital designer.
- You will have a passion for communications and content creations with the ability to present complex information in a clear, engaging manner. You will be able to tailor your communications style to suit your audience.
- You will have a keen eye for detail, enabling you to ensure that all communications are relevant and accurate. Therefore, supporting customers and maintaining a positive reputation for DVLA.
- You will have excellent interpersonal skills and will enjoy being part of a dynamic team. You will be able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with a range of internal stakeholders and Arm’s Length Bodies, predominantly GDS.

Selection process details

For your CV and personal statement, please provide detailed evidence of your experience of the following essential criteria:
- Experience of leadership where you have led and motivated a specialist team.
- Experience of using your strong understanding of a range of online and offline communications channels, to effectively deliver information.
- Experience of seeking and identifying opportunities for content to be made more effective by developing recommendations for continuous improvement using available insight and digital tools.

This interview will be conducted on site at DVLA, Swansea. Further details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.
