Job summary
The Judgments Clerk reports to the Costs and Judgments Officer. This role also involves working closely with the Justices and the Registry team to ensure that all judgments of the UKSC and JCPC are handled efficiently, in a timely manner, and with accuracy.
Purpose of the role:
- To co-ordinate the production of judgments, press summaries and court orders for the UKSC and JCPC.
- To provide accurate and reliable data reports for Justices and other colleagues.
- To support the Costs and Judgments Officer with the formal complaints process.
- To engage with the launch of the new case management system and website Portal and to improve processes as new ways of working are developed.
- To assist flexibly with administrative duties in the Registry team.
Job description
Key Responsibilities:
Judgments and orders
- Formatting draft judgments and ensuring conformity with template/house style
- Planning judgment hand-down schedule including detailed summer vacation planning
- Circulating draft judgments to justices, law reporters and legal teams and ensuring hand-down schedule is adhered to
- Providing regular and accurate information about the judgments timetable to the Justices, CEO and the Registrar
- Organising the hand-down of judgments in court
- Drafting orders reflecting the judgment and circulating to parties.
- Coordinating and implementing the use of new technology and processes
Data
- Recording and reporting data using Court software for regular reports for the CEO and the Court management team
- Monitoring the robustness, utility and accuracy of statistical reports
Complaints
- Providing administrative support to the Costs and Judgments Officer in processing complaints: logging, categorising and researching background to complaints where necessary.
Change programme/Administrative support
- To assist with the launch of the new case management system and website Portal and to improve processes as new ways of working are developed as part of the Change Programme
Main duties:
Judgments
- Formatting and editing UKSC and JCPC draft judgments to a high degree of accuracy in accordance with the house-style, using the bespoke template. Rapid and confident familiarity with and ownership of the template software will be required, as will ability to assist justices with template needs.
- Fixing hand-down dates and planning the judgments hand-down schedule and ensuring all stakeholders are kept informed
- Cross-referencing and formatting final draft judgments to a high degree of accuracy before circulating to legal teams. Circulating to legal teams and law reporters, ensuring terms of judgment embargo and deadlines for corrections are clear
- Ensuring press summaries are prepared according to appropriate deadlines
- Ensuring corrections are passed to justices with clear deadlines and finalised in time for hand-down. Finalising judgments including application of metadata to judgment and press summary, ready for publication
- Co-ordinate hand-downs in court: fixing panels of justices to attend, preparing papers, liaising with parties and internal stakeholders about broadcasting and other arrangements.
Data
- Ensuring timely and accurate entry of judgment data on the case management system
- Preparing accurate and informative data reports for CEO and management team covering range of Registry data areas.
Complaints
- Log, categorise and monitor complaints liaising with Costs and Judgments Officer over responses. Ensuring all complaints and correspondence dealt with appropriately and in time.
Person specification
Essential Criteria:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong ICT skills and full competence in use of the Microsoft Office suite (in particular Outlook, Excel and Word), mobile technology and databases
- Good literacy and numeracy skills, with the ability to produce clear, well-presented, concise reports
- Able to prioritise tasks and plan ahead
- Excellent attention to detail
- Tact, diplomacy and discretion
