Taunton, Somerset.This role offers a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. All work-related travel and subsistence costs will be reimbursed except when travelling to your base location in line with departmental policy.

Job summary

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is at the forefront of an ambitious transformation journey, driving change across our systems, services, and culture. As a critical provider of geospatial maritime data, our Digital & Technology services are central to our evolution. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Digital Technology Officer (CDTO) to lead this transformation, ensuring our services meet the needs of our customers, including the Royal Navy, and uphold the UK's Safety of Life at Sea commitments.

Job description

Reporting directly to the CEO and as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CDTO will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of UKHO. You will lead our 200-strong Digital & Technology division, championing innovation, driving our digital strategy, and ensuring we remain at the cutting edge of maritime geospatial data services. Your leadership will be crucial in enhancing our digital services, fostering a culture of innovation, and ensuring we deliver on our transformation goals.

Essential Criteria

Professional Expertise:

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of service transformation that fundamentally influences the operational dynamics of an organisation. This encompasses a track record of successfully implementing changes in service delivery which significantly impact an organisation’s operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of new technology to operational processes and new product development, especially digital data products and services, for customer benefit. This knowledge and experience should be coupled with a successful track record in leading effective delivery of the resulting organisational change.
  • Experience of working at or near board level in a customer or service-orientated environment, ideally digital-focused but with a commercial angle with a deep appreciation for understanding customer needs.
  • The ability to drive innovation with digital strategy experience in enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Experience of working in an organisation of a comparable size and complexity to the UKHO.

Strategic Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement Expertise:

  • The ability to lead strategically with an independent spirit and questioning mind.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a board.
  • Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to work at speed, combined with the ability to engage, influence and persuade at all levels and with diverse stakeholders.
