Student Loans Company is a non-profit making Government-owned organisation to provide loans and grants to students in universities and colleges in the UK.  Since 1989, we have enabled our customers to invest in their futures by delivering secure, accurate and efficient assessment, payment and repayment services.  SLC also support students with disabilities within their further education journey by administering the Disabled Student Allowances (DSAs) scheme.  This support comes in many forms, from Assistive Technology software and human support to assistance with travel costs. The DSAs account for over £130 million of student finance funding every year and we work with circa 1500 suppliers nationwide.

DSA Officers

We are looking for motivated and dynamic individuals with a passion for delivering excellent customer service to join our busy DSA team in Darlington

Our DSA Officers are responsible for assessing student’s eligibility and entitlement to DSAs in accordance with the relevant regulations and Equality Act whilst ensuring appropriate support is agreed for DSA customers, in line with Government guidelines.  In addition, DSA Officers will liaise with a number of stakeholders including external Needs Assessors, Disability Advisors and third-party providers to ensure we provide the right support to our customers.

This a busy and varied role includes delivering a high-level of customer service and provide advice to customers with varying disabilities through a variety of communication channels including inbound/outbound calls, emails, webchat and letter.

SLC offers a Blend working model where you can typically work 3 days at home with 2 days in the office, but we know this might not suit everyone and we can offer full time office working instead – the option is yours! 

Person specification

To join our team in Darlington you must demonstrate the following:

  • Significant experience in working in a customer-focussed role, with the ability to empathise with customers who may be considered vulnerable.
  • Excellent IT skills, with significant experience working with MS Office, email and multiple software platforms.
  • A passion for customer service with the ability to understand customers’ needs and a desire to deliver high standards.
  • The ability to use your own initiative whilst working within defined guidelines and adapt to changing working environments, in a positive manner.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively through a variety of channels including telephone, email, and letter.
  • A commitment to continue your own learning and development whilst maintaining the key knowledge and skills required for your role.
  • Awareness of disabilities, the Equality Act 2010 and the barriers disabled students face is preferred
