Successful candidates will be offered the minimum of the pay scale, but in some circumstances salary negotiations will be dependent on the demonstration of skills and experience. This is a pivotal role, providing an amazing opportunity to shape how we conduct our business reviews and use analytics to drive data-driven conversations and decision-making. You’ll lead the way in transforming our business data into clear, actionable insights that enable our leaders to make strategic decisions and improve operational efficiency. You'll lead an enthusiastic team of analysts responsible for delivering several data products, helping to drive change the strategic thinking across the organisation.

Job description

As a Principal Corporate Performance Analyst, you will:

  • Turn business data into clear insights that help our leaders make strategic decisions and improve operations.
  • Lead an enthusiastic team of analysts and promote best practices in using analytical tools and techniques.
  • Work with different teams to gather important data, giving a complete view of business performance.
  • Lead regular business performance reviews, promoting openness and continuous improvement.
  • Deliver accurate reports and dashboards on time that highlight key metrics, making it easy for stakeholders to track progress.
  • Oversee our Public Targets and lead the development of further data products, ensuring all data is accurate, current, and presented well.
  • Spot new trends and potential risks early, providing insights to keep our leaders ahead of the game.

To be eligible for this role you also need to meet our Nationality requirements which are outlined below and also successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Clearance (SC) before they can be appointed. To gain (SC) you will need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 3 years out of the last 5 years.

Person specification

We're looking for the following experience, which will be assessed at sift and at interview. Please refer to the bullet points below when writing your personal statement.

We are looking for an analytical leader that has:

  • Experience of implementing and leading analytical best practices, particularly those relating to reproducibility and quality assurance of analysis.
  • Experience of performing analysis and visualisation using statistical programming languages and business intelligence tools (e.g. R, Python, SQL, Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience of translating business processes across multiple areas (e.g. operations, finance, HR) into measurable key performance indicators.
  • The ability to work proactively and set the agenda, working with a high degree of autonomy and being comfortable identifying the priorities in your data analysis and reporting areas.
  • The ability to build and maintain relationships with a range of people within the organisation and across different departments.
  • Strong communication skills. You will need to be able to present complex data and recommendations to senior stakeholders in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.
  • Be (or be willing to become) a badged member of the Government Statistician Group.
  • A degree in a numerate discipline or equivalent professional experience.

Technical Skills: 

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process – from the Government Statistician Group competency framework

  • Presenting and disseminating data effectively

Qualifications

Candidates should have one of the following:

• A first or second-class honours degree in a numerate subject containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar).
• A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar).
• Have worked in a statistical/data science field and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development (via a CPD Log Book) in statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree/HND (level five).
• Have achieved a level four apprenticeship including at least two years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis (via a CPD log book signed off by a manager or mentor who are members of the statistical profession).

What will the process look like?

Where you will be working: 

You will be aligned to either our Cardiff, Belfast or Edinburgh office, where we are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work. Our approach to hybrid working provides opportunities for you to be adaptable in the way you work so that you can achieve a healthy balance between your work and home life. Successful candidates must pass a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check before they can be appointed. BPSS is an entry level security check. It uses the Police National Computer (PNC) to make sure a candidate has no convictions. The check returns evidence of any current criminal record and un-spent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Check (SC) before they can be appointed. To gain (SC) clearance you will normally need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 5 years, and will need to successfully complete all stages of the vetting process which includes:
