Job summary

Job description
· Do you have an interest in how we can design better public services? · Would you like to learn how to put people at the heart of public services design and delivery? · Could you help make Welsh public services more inclusive and accessible to all? If so, the UCD Apprenticeship can offer you the first step towards a career in the digital, data and technology profession. Please note that we do not expect you to have experience or qualifications within user centred design and encourage people of all skill levels to get in touch. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a passion for learning to join the public sector as User Centred Design Apprentices. You will be studying for a relevant apprenticeship qualification, whilst collaborating with our user centred design team as they work on exciting projects. Within this apprentice scheme you will gain insight and practical knowledge within Content design, User research, Service Design and Interaction design. You will also gain first-hand experience of working with agile methodologies, a valued way of working that will aid you as you progress throughout your UCD career. You will work towards a level 3 qualification in user centred design, whilst collaborating with experienced practitioners and gaining valuable practical experience. During your time at WRA you will develop a range of skills and experience, such as: · User centred design skills · Research skills · Communication skills · Organisational skills · Agile working · Presenting information in creative and interesting ways · Applying digital service standards to work · Designing potential solutions to meet user problems You will also gain a flavour of the different roles within the digital, data and technology profession allowing you to consider your future career options. To be eligible to apply you: · will be 18 years of age, or over, by the time you take up the post. · will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts) · will be educated to GCSE level (including English & Maths) · will have good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn · will have experience of using Microsoft packages How you will be supported As well as getting the best possible work experience you will meet regularly with your college tutor and supervisor who will support you through the qualification. You’ll spend 80% of this time developing your skills on your placements and 20% doing academic training, online learning, self-study, or completing assignments. You will receive additional training and support from the user centred design professionals within WRA as well as having access to WRA training and development courses. To achieve your apprenticeship certificate, you will need to successfully complete all your work, assignments and produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates the skills and knowledge you have gained against the units required. To successfully pass the apprenticeship scheme you will need to have: · Passed probation · Achieved your Diploma in User-Centred Design · Achieved your Apprenticeship Framework certificate · Successfully evidenced your skills and experience against the apprenticeship criteria · Actively participated in all work-related activities throughout the assignment with sufficient workplace attendance. Person specification
The role sits within the User Centred Design team, a multi-skilled team made up of user researchers, an interaction designer, and a service designer who work across the WRA.
This is an exciting time to be in the WRA as we are designing an end-to-end service for a visitor levy in Wales, the legislation is being introduced into the Senedd this Autumn.
Our team will be working using agile methodology, planning, undertaking, and analysing user research on the new service. We are building our capability to design this service ourselves and we work closely with digital colleagues, in multi-disciplined teams, as well as tax professionals, stakeholders and our users.
The team covers a wide range of work, including:
- Designing a new visitor levy service
- User research on new and existing services
- Managing feedback, user research and surveys across WRA services
- Co-ordinating behaviour change projects
- Supporting projects to change service delivery
- Co-design of services, including journey mapping and wireframing Testing our systems and changes with users and ensuring they are
- easy to use and accessible
- Proactively identifying and recommending customer-led change
- Act as champions for user centred design across the WRA
