Academi Wales is the national centre for leadership excellence for the public services in Wales. Academi Wales supports the development of individual and organisational leadership, with leadership being devolved and distributed across our public services, throughout networks and across geographical and sectoral boundaries. 

Academi Wales develops, delivers and evaluates a range of leadership development interventions including conferences and schools, programmes, short courses, masterclasses, bespoke learning support and facilitation, details of which can be found on its website.

The post is an external training development and delivery role, enabling Academi Wales to support the wider public sector across Wales to develop its leadership capability in line with principle of One Welsh Public Service.

The role:

This post has a crucial external development and delivery role that provides leadership support to ensure Academi Wales is able to respond to its role as an enabler to public service organisations in their delivery.  The post holder will take responsibility for the design, development and delivery of leadership learning interventions and programmes.  This will include ensuring our offer meets the needs of our customers, and truly supports the public sector across Wales.  The postholder will work with the wider team to ensure the Academi offer is coherent and all interventions are appropriately targeted.  This will include working with the customer insight and research leads to understand customer needs and to ensure effective evaluation of all interventions.

There will be a small team of programme development and delivery experts who will work together to ensure programmes are coherent and effectively targeted to relevant audiences and meet our customers’ needs.  We are currently working to develop a curated offer of refreshed programmes, which will be targeted at Senior and Top Tier Leaders; Leaders in the pipeline to Senior Leadership; and those in their early leadership career.

Person specification

  • Development and delivery of behavioural leadership interventions targeted at the specific audience segments identified as Senior and Top Tier Leaders; Leaders in the pipeline to Senior Leadership; and those in their early leadership career.  Making sure all interventions align with wider strategy for the Welsh Public Sector, including sustainability and equality.
  • Developing interventions that support modern ways of working, including delivery face to face and online, designed to meet identified needs.  This will include developing an appropriate mix of short courses, conference sessions and extended programmes.
  • Develop and maintain a range of individual, team and organisational stakeholder relationships, across the public, third and private sector to promote a systematic and high quality approach to leadership, management and organisational development across the Welsh public service.
  • Investigate and consider up to date theories and models for public service managers and leaders that support current leadership thinking and practice and stretch for future development.
  • Identifying and promoting best practice in management, leadership and organisational development, including expert areas of delivery, expert practitioners and exemplars.

Current key objectives include:

  • To develop a refreshed offer of leadership interventions targeted at each of the specific audiences identified in our curated offer.
  • Commissioning additional resources, including source subject matter experts and relevant speakers, as required to ensure effective deliver across a range of topics relevant to the target audience.
  • Delivery of target interventions, both online and face to face, including workshops and masterclasses.
  • Supporting a small team to build and develop skills in the development and delivery of effective programmes.
