Job description

This job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

We’re seeking to appoint a permanent Senior Operational Meteorologist, and we also have a temporary position available (until August 2025) which has the potential to develop into a permanent position. We will also look to create a reserve pool to fill future permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise over the next twelve months.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work part time or those intending to work a job share.  Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

World changing work

From science to technology, from meteorology to management, and from planning to communication, our expertise helps us stand out as the authority on weather accuracy and climate prediction. You will be required to participate in covering an on-call requirement for shift extension including switching to night shifts at very short notice.

Your key duties

  • To apply operational service delivery knowledge and subject matter expertise of the defence user and global meteorology, when collaborating with our colleagues across Met Office/Navy Hydrography and Meteorology (HM) teams, to ensure a consistent environmental picture for the defence users.
  • To manage and deliver environmental services to Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ) and Joint Force Air Component (JFAC) briefing command teams regularly as well as producing seasonal forecasts and climate briefs to assist with planning of current and future operations and exercises.
  • To maintain an on-site embedded presence in PJHQ, JFHQ and JOMOC.
  • To manage and deliver remote environmental services to deployed defence users.
  • To manage and conduct environmental analysis to respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from a variety of defence users.
