Job summary

To deliver a high quality, effective and value-adding financial management service for NS&I providing comprehensive financial support, analysis, advice and guidance at all levels of the business to support robust, value-adding decision making and delivery of strategic objectives.

To work in partnership with internal Directorate(s) to ensure they are operating within NS&I’s financial control framework and that budgets are being appropriately managed and controlled to ensure the effective, efficient and economic use of financial resources.

Person specification

Essential skills and experience 

  • Working in financial management, including experience of budget monitoring and forecasting.
  • Analysing and interpreting financial information, and providing advice and options for resolution of issues arising.
  • Ability to explain financial information to senior management and non-finance colleagues.
  • Able to manage own workload to deliver multiple priorities within tight timescales.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build effective relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders.
  • Working across team boundaries to achieve common goals.

Essential technical knowledge 

  • Effective communication skills, presentation and relationship management skills. Experience of engaging effectively with multidisciplinary teams and delivering to deadlines.
  • Good up-to-date knowledge of core accounting standards and principles.
  • Computer skills with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.

Qualifications

One of the following:
• Full qualification with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT)
• Part qualified with Consultative Committee Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
• Actively studying for CCAB/CIMA qualification.

In your application you will be asked to provide the following  

  • An outline of your career history and qualifications with your key responsibilities and achievements.
  • A 250 personal statement focusing on your experience in the following key areas
    • Analysing and interpreting financial information, and providing advice and options for resolution of issues arising.
    • Able to manage own workload to deliver multiple priorities within tight timescales.
  • A 250 statement for each of the 2 selected behaviours at sift. Please use examples from your experience and knowledge to demonstrate how you meet them addressing the essential criteria in the Person Specification. We would recommend using the STAR method.
  • A 250 statement on the technical skill
    • Computer skills with advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel.

In the event we receive a large number of applicants, applications will be sifted first on the personal statement on the key experience. Those who demonstrate the minimal acceptable level of experience will then qualify for the full sift. 

If shortlisted, you will be invited to attend a 60 minute panel interview via video call. With a 30 minute excel assessment held either before or after your interview. Further details of this will be confirmed in the interview invite.

The interview questions will focus on each of the selected behaviours and the listed essential qualifications.

Working for NS&I

NS&I is currently working in a hybrid way with colleagues expected to work in the office for 40% of their working month and this will be increasing to 60% of their working month in the summer of 2024.  If you are applying to work in London, the role is currently based in Sanctuary Buildings, Great Smith Street, SW1P 3BT and in summer 2024 it is anticipated that NS&I will be moving out of Sanctuary Buildings and into another office within central London.

Any move to NS&I from another employer will mean you can no longer access childcare vouchers. This includes moves between government departments.
