This position has a tour length of 4 years, with a possible extension for an additional year.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
As the Defence Digital Installation Design Engineer (IDE) for Gibraltar, the role supports the Installation Design Authority (IDA), who acts as the liaison between the Joint Communications Support Unit Gibraltar (JCSU Gib) and a selected customer group within British Forces Gibraltar (BFG), to understand the operational and developmental needs of BFG for Defence Digital services. The role is then responsible for transitioning these needs into viable Site Co-ordination Installation Design Authority (SCIDA) compliant technical solutions, from concept to closure, as a local project manager.

Job description
Responsibilities:
- Enabling the planning function within DD JCSU Gib, by working closely with the unit’s delivery arms, to ensure they are suitably trained, equipped via tools and stores, and provided the correct information and works package, to ensure output.
- Deputise for the IDA as and when required to make empowered decisions.
- Requirements capture. In line with service level agreements, engage with customers to understand/analyse requirements, determine optimum solutions and formulate accurate specifications for assigned domain/work packages, from conception to closure, ensuring they are compliant with standards and policies.
- As part of the BF Gib CIS Infrastructure SME team, help develop a High-Level Design (HLD) or a Statement of Need (SoN) for the customer requirement, that is transitioned into a functional installation design/work package that complies with SCIDA requirements.
- Projects – new work. Assist the IDA by Project engineering the JCSU Gib CIS installation projects through the project milestones. Produce the list of equipment required to enable projects progression and advise on tools to produce the highest of quality output. Provide support to assist the development, implementation and acceptance of projects, including support as required to phase and baseline reviews. Support to systems design and critical design reviews.
- Assist and produce the installation documentation in the form of drawings, specifications and instructions, including the design of any required modifications to existing installations.
- Project disposal. Engage and assist in the identification and removal of any and all equipment, racks, containment, fixings and cabling which have been rendered redundant by the installation of new systems.
- Plan and manage the work, as prioritised by the IDA, of the relevant JCSU Gib teams to deliver the capability and as necessary, to technically lead on tasks, technical design, test specifications, quality plans and technical reports to meet customer requirements. Supporting and providing intelligent advice for Customer change, new requirements and DD driven change.
- Identify, specify, prepare and submit any Works Services elements including the requirements for power outlets, lighting, air conditioning, physical security measures and making good. Works Services proposals must be approved by the SCIDA before their submission to the Works Representative.
- Keeping them abreast of any future circuit disruptions. It is essential that all engineers are familiar with, and use the official DD planned outage notification process if there is a requirement to take a system offline for any period of time
- Continuous improvement. Ensure continuous improvement via Infra, new technology/systems, communications and training to ensure the Unit is operating as effectively as it can.
- Maintain a configuration control process for the Gib CIS estate to aid planning, fault finding and upgrades.
- There may be an opportunity for line management of staff.

Person specification
If you have the following skills and experience, we would love to hear from you!
Ideally, we would like to see some previous experience in IT design compliance or IT installation and/or experience of working in a Customer Service role, preferably within an ICT controlled installation design environment.
You’ll also need to have the following skills/qualities:
- The ability to build long term relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Highly effective networking and able to negotiate well and influence people.
- Able to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, synthesising information to portray key messages and facilitate effective decision making.
- Good problem-solving skills, including being able to demonstrate self-resilience when resolving issues.
- The desire to continue to learn and develop as an ICT professional!
Essential Licence:
- Current Full UK driving licence.
Whilst not essential, the following may also be beneficial:
- BTEC in electrical/electronic engineering or related subject
- HNC/HND in in electrical/electronic engineering or related subject
- ITIL v4 Practitioner qualification (training can be provided, if required)
A full UK Driving Licence is essential due to regular travel between the Defence sites in Gibraltar, many of which are remote and not easily accessible via public transport.
Dependent on the business need, there may be a requirement to travel to meetings and/or training in the UK and potentially to other overseas locations.
If not already held, successful candidates will be required to obtain DV clearance prior to taking up employment.
