Job summary
The Epidemiology and Risk Modelling team at Cefas is an internationally recognised group of risk analysts, modellers and epidemiologists delivering high quality scientific evidence for the development of the UK’s aquatic animal health policy. The team provides robust knowledge and expertise to understand, assess and manage health risks from aquatic animal diseases and non-native species.
We provide unique expertise in data analysis and risk assessment that support evidence-based advice to the UK Government and abroad. We are committed to ensuring the sustainability and safety of wild and farmed aquatic ecosystems, whilst supporting trade and aquaculture industry.
To this aim, we are seeking a data analyst who is keen to expand the application of their skills to both research and policy development. Your work will centre on data analysis, mathematical modelling and risk assessments to advise on the prevention, management and control of epidemiological risks associated with aquatic animal ecosystems.
This work is largely desk-based. It comprises the collection, processing and interpretation of data extracted from in-house, national and international databases, and from the scientific and grey literature. It may also require data collation from field and laboratory-based studies to inform computational and economic models.

Job description
Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Desk-based data analysis involving the collection, storing, processing and interpretation of data to support risk assessments and epidemiological studies.
- Support development of risk assessment tools and models for national and international risk of aquatic animal disease and non-native species.
- Working with colleagues across Cefas’ teams, national UK government agencies and internationally, to obtain the data required for these studies.
- Communicating and presenting complex data and advice effectively.
- Responsibility for data management in accordance with government standards.
- Input into official government reports, grant applications and publications.
In addition, Cefas reserves the right to ask staff to take on additional duties and responsibilities which are commensurate with their grade. Team Leaders and management will have a discussion with staff to explain the changes that are to be made. A new job description will be issued if required.
Person specification
The following are essential criteria required for this role and you must be able to demonstrate your skills and experience in the following areas:
- Experience in coding, using R and/or Python;
- Broad understanding of epidemiological and/or ecological systems;
- Experience in analysing and interpreting complex data for development of practical solutions;
- Flexibility and adaptability to work as part of a team, but also autonomously;
- Proven scientific writing and communication skills, with evidence of contributions to peer-reviewed publications;
- Excellent time management skills and must demonstrate excellent attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time; and
- A degree in Mathematics or Biological science with mathematical modelling and/or statistical analysis components, or previous relevant work experience with the ability to demonstrate meeting all the essential criteria as listed within this person specification section.

Sift

Location
As part of the pre-employment process for this post, successful candidate(s) will be able to agree a contractual workplace from those locations listed in this advert. The agreed contractual workplace is then the substantive and permanent place of work for the successful candidate(s)
