Reporting to the Digital Communications Manager, the post holder will join our Social Media team which sits within External Communications.

This role contributes to the delivery of a substantial digital engagement programme guided by Intellectual Property Office (IPO) strategic communication priorities and those of our sponsor organisation, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

The IPO is the agency accountable for intellectual property (IP) policy. It grants UK patents, trade marks, design rights, and educates businesses and consumers about IP rights and their benefits to business. IPO is also the government agency responsible for copyright policy.

This is an exciting time for intellectual property rights, which play a foundation role in enabling successful innovation and economic growth. Your input and creativity will help raise awareness and respect for IP. Our audiences include the intellectual property community, small to medium sized businesses (SMEs), business advisors, academic organisations, industry stakeholders and consumers as well as protecting and enhancing the IPO's reputation worldwide.

Working location

This role will be carried out in-line with IPO Hybrid working arrangements where staff are currently expected to spend at least 20% of their time working onsite from one of our offices. This role is based in our Newport office.

The requirement for attendance at an office location can vary by role so we would encourage candidates to discuss working arrangements with the recruiting manager to agree a reasonable balance between working from home and the office.

Job description

The post holder will play an important role in delivering communications that are guided by the IPO’s strategic communication priorities, promoting knowledge of, and respect for, IP.

You will:

•    undertake a valued role as a member of our Social Media team, in accordance with the IPO’s values as a diverse, inclusive, brilliant place to work

•    oversee the daily management of all our digital channel activities, working closely in alignment with our Strategic Communications, Web, Campaigns, Creative & Print, Press & Media, Public Affairs and Enforcement teams, acting as a digital ambassador; identify key opportunities for promoting IPO messages by choosing and engaging with appropriate partners

•    work together with IPO’s talented Creative team to develop engaging, persuasive, shareable digital content for IPO’s digital media channels, subscriber email bulletin and two blog platforms hosted on Gov.uk, including our blog partnership with BBC Dragons’ Den

•    write, commission and edit written content that is engaging, timely and accessible and in line with the Government Digital Service (GDS) style guide; provide editorial content where needed within the wider team

•    work closely with colleagues across the business and external partners to contribute to campaign planning using the Government Communication Service (GCS) OASIS framework and SMART objectives; evaluate the effectiveness of digital communications activity to assess effectiveness

•    monitor and reply to comments across IPO social media channels, engaging with teams across the business to answer customer enquiries promptly and factually, horizon scanning for reputational risk

•    co-ordinate and maintain our case study database and asset database
