These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities.  Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.

This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Emerging and future technologies are creating significant threats as well as opportunities to our armed forces. To stay in front of our adversaries, we must be innovative, agile, and able to modify and implement the latest technology and engineering practices, procedures, and equipment; and therefore deliver, directly in support of the operational user.

As an electronics engineering expert in a high performing and technically talented team, we need an individual who will design, prototype, and deliver novel solutions to solve tactical, operational and at times strategic level problems that will have an immediate and direct effect on physical operations.

You will be fully conversant with the design and engineering of unmanned systems, including policy, governance, and management requirements, and be able to advise on new capabilities whose application and introduction would have significant effects on the organisation.

You will be familiar with mechanical design documents, electronic schematics and interpreting complicated data sheets and technical documentation. You should be familiar with networking protocols which will be utilised in unmanned aerial systems.

You will be expected to conduct trials and evaluations, electronics and communication integration and design, and test and deliver solutions. You will deal directly with operational military users of all ranks. You will handle national sensitive information; you will use this detail in conjunction with your personable people skills, natural sense of integrity and your technical expertise to reach conclusions and solutions.

You will have an OfQual level 6 qualification (or evidence of comparable experience and skills) in electronic engineering, software, communications, or a similar discipline. You will bring considerable experience across many areas such as communication systems, software programming, electronics design, and unmanned aerial systems.

Person specification

The Autonomous systems engineer officer will work as an integral part of a Specialist Team of technologists and engineers; however, the role is specific and therefore the post must be for a qualified engineering practitioner. Employing a continual quality management solution, the Autonomous systems engineer officer is responsible for the delivery of approved electronics designs and development, including the fabrication of electronics and communication parts, guidance, and analysis for the group’s senior leadership and soldiers. This advice must be based on the latest available technology, research (across government and academia), regulatory articles and in line with ISO 9001 standards and Aviation regulations (MAA, CAA). Advice will directly inform unit and science and technology teams in current and future strategies and capabilities.

This position is ‘hands-on’ and technical. You should not apply if you do not see yourself in an engineering workshop at some point conducting hands-on duties such as systems integration, software coding of communication systems, processors or indeed designing, building testing unmanned aerial communication solutions.

Qualifications

OfQual level 6 qualification in a relevant Engineering discipline (e.g., BEng/Bsc) with relevant experience of R&D.
