Job description

We look forward to reading your application for the role of Firearms Curriculum Designer and Trainer.

The selected candidate will develop, maintain and support training curriculum in relation to armed policing and less lethal weapons. Support the national standardisation in relation to Taser training through the delivery of Taser lead instructor and technician training. Provide associated subject matter expertise to police forces, stakeholders and judicial bodies.

Person specification

Some of your responsibilities will include:

•    Supporting the development of the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC) to ensure that all UK armed policing related roles are trained safely and in accordance with national training and assessment standards and relevant regulatory requirements. Produce evidence-based reports highlighting non-compliance issues and areas for development where appropriate.
•    Developing methods to educate and advance understanding within the armed policing and less lethal weapons sector. As a point of contact within the College, provide expert advice which promotes and supports implementation of processes which ensure compliance with the NPFTC and common national standards. Identify and promulgate lessons learnt via national seminars, Knowledge Hub and engagement.
•    Taking responsibility for specific training modules, courses or work-streams, revising curriculum modules, lesson plans and training materials to address changes in professional practice, guidance, standards and/or feedback. Maintain audit to ensure that learning programmes are accurate, up-to-date and that definitive records of revisions and reviews to the curriculum are maintained.

To be successful in this role you’ll need:
•    To be a qualified trainer to meet the Police Sector Standard for the Training of Trainers: Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS Level 4) or NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Learning and Development or equivalent. 
•    Experience of delivering firearms and taser training to College curriculum standards within a UK police force or agency.
•    To be a qualified, competent and current in the management of Health and Safety - IoSH or equivalent

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Operational UK policing experience as an authorised firearms and Taser officer.
  • Experience of delivering firearms training to College curriculum standards within a UK police force or agency.
  • Experience in successful design and development of firearms training and/or learning and development products, using a variety of evidence-based approaches and delivery solutions.
  • Proven experience of working collaboratively to develop and implement business solutions for all stakeholders.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC), Authorised Professional Practice–Armed Policing (APP-AP) and the Codes of Practice on Armed Policing and the Police Use of Less Lethal Weapons.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, challenge and build effective working relationships with internal and external senior stakeholders and staff to achieve timely results.

This is a designated homeworking role, however, will require regular travel to all College of Policing sites, UK police forces and external organisations, including overnight stays to visit and review force.
