Job summary
The Defence School of Logistics and Administration (DSLA), one of three schools in the Defence College of Support (DCSp) delivers training to all Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force service personnel in Supply, Distribution, Catering, and Personnel Administration. The college headquarters is also based at Worthy Down - a newly built, modern campus in Winchester.
This role sits within DSLA, and the Logistics Supply Training Wing, providing initial trade training and subsequent trade training to logisticians; the trainees vary in ranks from all three services, as well as international students, civilian grades and Defence industry partners. Training takes place across 3 squadrons based at Marchwood (73 Training Squadron), RAF Brize Norton (Defence Movements Training Squadron) and Worthy Down (Defence Petroleum and Specialist Training Squadron). The training audience includes officers, as well as soldiers and aviators of the following trades: Petroleum Operator, Movements Controller, Mariner, Port Operator, Vehicle Support Specialist, Marine Engineer, Logistics (Supplier), Logistics (Mover), Postal & Courier, Equipment Repair, Tailoring and Dangerous Goods.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of Port Operations and Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) Training at 73 Squadron, Marchwood, and will be required to instruct on all trade Port Operator courses.
The position is advertised at 37 hours per week, and attendance to the stated site will be required.

Job description
Specific tasks the Specialist Instructional Officer Port Operations is required to deliver include:
- Providing technical advice on all matters concerning Port Operator training
- Plan, organise and control the allocation of trainers and resources to ensure effective delivery of all courses within the Port Operations department
- Ensure the efficient and effective planning of course instances for the following training year
- Maintain the course instances throughout the year
- Plan and manage the legislative requirements and ensure that they are adhered to
- Conduct research and complete Business Case documentation for the purchase of equipment and materials
- Continually review training to ensure it is cost effective and efficient, promoting and developing blended and E Learning for all courses
- Collaborate and provide assistance to Course Design to ensure changes and amendments to courses are completed expeditiously
- Liaise with awards and examining bodies to gain appropriate accreditation for Port Operation courses
- Conduct training for officer and soldier professional and trade training, including practical assessments and marking summative examinations
- Conduct mentoring and professional development of trainers
- Conduct trainee interviews when notified via the Progress Review Report
- Provide counselling and remedial action, up to and including return to unit (RTU) action
- Effectively line manage the Civil Service posts within the department
- Monitor developments in the civil port industry and related legislation to ensure service requirements remain current
Person specification
Are you an experienced Port Operator? Have you done instructing or teaching before? This role could be just what you are looking for!
It would be desirable for candidates to have an in-depth experience of port operations as they will be required to instruct on all Port Operator courses.
A teaching qualification and a Coaching Supervision Training qualification is desirable but, if not already held, the successful candidate will be required to attend the Defence Trainer course (DTC) at another site that may mean daily travel or be away from home for 2 weeks.
Applicant will be expected to accurately maintain records on local IT Applications. You will be required to attend training of any bespoke courses.
Desirable:
- Qualifications in or in-depth awareness of mobile and quay cranes and crane supervisor or appointed per-sons positions.
