Are you interested in learning more about population health?

This is a great opportunity for those in early to mid-career professionals providing NHS or public services relevant to population health (AfC band 6 and above, or equivalent; dentists-in-training; doctors-in-training post-FY2 and their SAS equivalent).  Your current Terms and Conditions will remain the same. The aim is to support early to mid-career health and care professionals from diverse career paths. The fellowship is open to fully registered clinicians providing NHS services and individuals from the wider workforce who are providing NHS or public sector services which are relevant to population health.

It is a one-year part-time programme at two days a week alongside your substantive post, which can start anytime between 1st December 2024 and 31st January 2026.  Fellow of the Population Health would be placed at the Blood Safety, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV (BSHSH) Division. This is the national centre for surveillance of hepatitis, HIV and other STIs in England. The Division consists of around 100 permanent and project-funded medical, scientific, technical and administrative staff including epidemiologists, public health specialists, microbiologists, virologists, data managers and statisticians. We believe that this Division and UKHSA would be an excellent placement for the Fellow as we foster learning environment and provide a comprehensive population health experience including learning about surveillance systems for BBV, data analyses and statistics, understanding various infectious disease control programmes and use of evidence to inform and support development of national policy.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving the health of the population, reducing health inequalities, and interested in working at the national centre of excellence for prevention and surveillance of infectious diseases. 

Work that Fellow is expected to undertake: 

  • Recruit few pilot study sites in primary care (with a support from UKHSA and using established networks)
  • Identify research question (depending on Fellow’s interest), develop topic guide to conduct interviews and focus groups
  • Conduct some qualitative interviews and focus groups with primary care staff on the importance of health protection prevention in primary care with a specific focus on BBV (Hep B, Hep C and HIV) to understand barriers to vaccination, contact  tracing, testing etc. 
  • Potentially also interview/survey patients, this would be dependent on how quickly we can obtain ethical approvals, and if it is needed 
  • Analyze qualitative findings, supported by behavioural scientists team at UKHSA
  • If there is capacity, either analyse or support some analyses of the routine data sources. If no capacity for analyses, interpret some analyses to understand BBV epidemiology, identify inequalities and inform guidelines/recommendations development
  • Write a short paper on findings and recommendations on improving BBV prevention and management in general practice
  • Develop a communication plan on how to disseminate findings 
  • Fellow will also be expected to take up various learning opportunities at UKHSA such as lunch and learn sessions, training on behavioural research, data analyses etc. 
  • Depending on Fellow’s interest, they would be encouraged to join staff equality and diversity networks and workplace wellbeing networks
  • Shadowing at national meetings such as HIV Action Plan Implementation Group etc. Recruit few pilot study sites in primary care (with a support from UKHSA and using established networks)
  • Identify research question (depending on Fellow’s interest), develop topic guide to conduct interviews and focus groups

Academic

Essential criteria

  • Registered healthcare professional providing NHS services (AfC band 6 and above, or equivalent; dentists-in-training, doctors-in-training ST1 and above, SAS equivalent).

Desirable criteria

  • Additional degree or postgraduate qualification (e.g. membership by examination, diploma, etc.)
  • National or international award/prize in relevant area
  • Publication in peer reviewed journal
  • Presentations (poster/oral) at an external conference or author in a non-peer reviewed publication

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrates strong oral and documented communication skills

  • Basic numeracy: able to understand and manipulate data
  • Able to search and critically review literature

This role is based at Colindale

As it is based at one of our scientific locations you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Successful candidates must also pass a disclosure and barring security check.
