Job summary
The Construction, Infrastructure and Energy Directorate is recruiting a Logistics Sector Manager to support the development of our work in this recently created team. As a new team, this is an exciting time, getting to know the component parts of the sector and, working closely with industry and relevant other parts of Government, determining where we can best add value. We are a small team and you will have the opportunity to get involved in many different areas from account management to international trade to briefing Ministers and more besides!
The UK logistics sector plays a critical role as an enabler of economic growth by facilitating the movement of goods and optimising supply chains for businesses. It is a broad sector that will give the job holder the opportunity to cover a number of key themes of interest to the government – decarbonisation, skills and the labour market, infrastructure planning and technology developments.
The job holder will have the opportunity to further develop key skills in relationship management, strategic thinking and communication whilst leading a sector of significant importance to the UK economy.
We are looking for someone who is a self-starter, enjoys working collaboratively with external and internal stakeholders and is comfortable working with others to develop solutions to support the growth of the sector. In return, we are a friendly and supportive team, with a strong emphasis on high performance and wellbeing.
Job description
You will:
- Develop a clear understanding of the Logistics sector including strengths and weaknesses, contribution to economic growth, how it will achieve net zero ambitions, skills and workforce issues etc.
- Build and maintain relationships with strategically important logistics companies to understand their priorities, challenges and drivers for future investment and growth.
- Develop an understanding of capability in the UK-based supply chain to assess strengths and weaknesses for export and investment potential.
- Build a strong relationship with the main sector trade bodies and engage regularly with other industry stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively across Department for Business and Trade (DBT) HQ teams who have an interest in the sector to understand cross-cutting issues that impact the logistics system, such as airports, rail, maritime, automotive, skills, planning, and supply chain resilience.
- Work collaboratively across government departments, bringing business intelligence to the table to influence policy development and support to achieve growth in the sector.
- Lead on drafting briefings and correspondence (including parliamentary) to support the relationship between industry, Ministers and government officials.
- Develop an understanding, and create materials in support, of UK investment opportunities to support regional development, with input from DBT investment and regional colleagues.
- Work with investment colleagues to support the delivery of strategically important logistics projects.
- Have the potential to take on management responsibilities.
- Play an active role in developing team culture in the immediate team and in the wider directorate.
