Job summary

Cyber and Information Systems (CIS) is one of the Science and Technology (S&T) Business Units within Dstl. Our vision is to deliver evidence based resilient sensing, information and effector systems for defence and security.

As Senior Safety Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in advising on the management of Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HS&EP) risks that arise from CIS activities including trials, prototyping and lab activities.  

In addition to supporting day-to-day business you will lead on health and safety improvement matters and ensure CIS’s approach to health and safety is suitable and proportionate.

Job description

In this role you will:

  • Provide competent and technical safety advice to CIS staff.
  • Advise the Chief Safety Officer, Head of Safety, Business Unit Heads and Chairs of relevant Safety Technical Authorities of any changes to relevant legislation, codes of practice or guidance that effect Dstl activities and to propose an effective course of action where necessary.  
  • Contribute to and develop an effective programme of assurance including identification of safety issues across all CIS activity and recommending corrective action.
  • On behalf of the Head of CIS, take functional ownership of CIS Organisation & Arrangements for Health, Safety to ensure staff are aware of their responsibilities and are operating safely.
  • Lead and drive health and safety improvements.
  • Assist in investigations and assure actions are implemented and effective.

Person specification

Essential Experience:

  • Relevant experience managing Health & Safety in the workplace either as HSE Practitioner or in delivery role with key HSE responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of hazard profile and risk mitigation strategies associated with a Science, Technology or Engineering environment.
  • Planning, leading and conducting or supporting H&S investigations or incidents.
  • Working with and influencing stakeholders.
  • An approach based on information and knowledge sharing.
  • Demonstrable ability to prioritise workload in the face of conflicting demands.

Work location:

Dstl is strongly encouraging blended and flexible working either at one of our sites or from home or both. We want to empower you to undertake your duties at the most appropriate location for the task, however you will be allocated a Dstl site as a base. You may be required to travel to other Dstl and MoD sites as required.

• Recognised Safety qualification at National Qualifications Framework Level 3 or NVQ equivalent e.g. NEBOSH General Certificate.
• Hold Tech IOSH or equivalent with a recognised H&S professional body.
