Job summary
We are currently looking for a Scientific Assessor – Import Notifications System to join our Population Health – Unlicensed Medicines Function within the Healthcare Quality and Access group.
This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.
We are currently operate a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.
The objective of the Healthcare Quality and Access (HQA) portfolio is to drive quality and critically appraise benefits and risks to inform robust decisions on healthcare access including accelerated access pathways. It will do this by bringing together a fusion of our capabilities across both medicines and medical devices to enable licensing and market access, as well as ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
The Population Health – Unlicensed Medicine function, part of HQA, delivers a risk-based appraisal of Unlicensed medicines and whether they may or may not be supplied within the UK to safeguard public health. It enables wider access to these important medicines when licensed medicines are not available to meet the needs of individual patients.
Job description
The post holder will work as part of the Import Notification System (INS) assessment team performing compliance assessment and assess low risk notifications of intent to import unlicensed medicines with a view on the safety, and safety in relation to quality of unlicensed medicines. The INS is an MHRA function dedicated to the statutory duty of processing and assessing notifications of intent to import unlicensed medicines into the UK.
Key responsibilities:
- Compliance assessment of notifications of intent to import unlicensed medicines into the UK received under SI 2005/2789 regulation 167 and Schedule 4 against internal SOPs.
- Working independently, assess low risk notifications as indicated by a Pharmaceutical Assessor of Unlicensed medicines. Decisions must be made in a timeframe appropriate to the urgency of the issue, and on the information available at that time.
- Provide support to other activities affecting medicine supply such as public health emergencies, ensuring flexibility and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
Person specification
- Hold a degree in a relevant life science (e.g. pharmacy, pharmacy technician or other relevant experience).
- Have experience gathered by working within the pharmaceutical industry, NHS, or a national competent authority. This experience will include applicability of regulatory knowledge and the analysis of scientific information and good manufacturing practices for medicines.
- Be able to demonstrate experience in developing successful relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, with excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrate to be able to deliver results on time and within a range of deadlines and competing priorities.
- Demonstrate to be able of effective decision making, including clear communication of the purpose and reasons for recommendations and decisions.
