Job summary
This role plays a crucial role in developing pay strategies and implementing initiatives that will support Defence to meet its strategic objectives through attracting, motivating and retaining talented individuals. You will be joining us at a critical time as we modernise, simplify and automate the reward landscape.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
In this role, you will:
- Provide an overview and implementation of the annual delegated pay review by undertaking TU negotiations and managing other stakeholders who are crucial to the delivery of the award.
- Provision of expert advice on the overall pay framework in Defence and annual pay reviews, using a broad evidence-based to design and implement changes to Defence pay arrangements.
- Working alongside the Reward Team on varied of projects which will simplify the reward environment and resolve some of the longer-term projects, including understanding the evidence base and translating it into policy development.
- Work with a range of stakeholders not limited to senior stakeholders up to Director General, senior business stakeholders, Cabinet Office, HM Treasury, the Armed Forces Remuneration Team, and Defence’s Arm’s Length Bodies.

Person specification
We are looking for an experienced senior HR professional who holds CIPD level 7 or committed to working towards this.
Applicants must have a strong working knowledge of pay and reward practices, and ideally an understanding of how pay works in the Civil Service. Applicants need to be able to develop, model and implement pay and reward strategies, and therefore a strong ability to use data insights to find solutions to complex problems is essential.
This role will work with some of the more senior leaders in the organisation on complex issues, so applicants will need strong communication and influencing skills, and an ability to explain complex issues succinctly both verbally and in written advice.
The Reward Team is friendly and we work together to achieve our aims. The successful candidate needs to be a team player, and be willing to be flexible to support the highest priorities for the team at any time.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
