Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a small but impactful, brand-new team in Air Command. A team that will be core to how the command supports productivity initiatives and governs their progress. The team will be embedding systematic processes that deliver against the productivity ambition and drives a more cost-conscious culture, leading to an improved relationship between cost, value, and Defence outputs.
The SEO Productivity Hub Lead is relationship focused and will be engaging with an extensive Air Stakeholder base to deepen a greater understanding about productivity and how Air will get the most fighting power from the money they spend. They will have to negotiate in a sensitive climate to help stakeholders understand that whilst Air does have productivity targets, this does not necessarily mean cost cutting people and capability but approaching our business as usual differently. They will also have to balance this approach so it deconflicts and works in synergy with other Air initiatives that are also seeking efficiency and continuous improvement.
As well as working within Air the SEO Productivity role will be the key contact for other front-line commands such as the Army and Navy, where they will lead the MoD Efficiency Forum and connect Air to the centrally owned Productivity Teams. This is to understand where we can share lessons learned, process or initiatives that require we work together to meet defence delivery.
This role is suitable for hybrid working. Job holders may work from home or another MOD site, with regular attendance at High Wycombe as required based on individual, team and business needs.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The SEO productivity lead will be responsible for articulating the Air position in productivity delivery. Presenting to seniors what benefits could be realised in both cashable and non-cashable terms. They will work with the Productivity Management Information (MI) and Analytics role to understand where some initiatives have not made progress and use the provided data to support decision making and influence what should be prioritised to deliver the greatest impact against Air’s outputs.
Airs Productivity initiatives will be captured in the “Hopper” (currently a Microsoft Power BI tool). The role will be working with a varying range of stakeholders to understand where each initiative is against already agreed maturity levels. They will support the initiative owner in progression through the maturity levels where required. This could be writing a business case for additional support to see the initiative delivered. Initiatives are owned by the business area and are not the responsibility of this role for delivery.
For the Hopper to continue to grow, the role will be responsible for facilitating idea generation events by enabling interactive forums using data analytics tools when applicable. Events can be face to face (preferred) or over MS Teams. Idea generation event stakeholders are identified by the business as who has the most appropriate knowledge, so could be any rank/grade. Ideas may come through another initiative and the role will need to work with these programmes to determine if they fit productivity ambitions, where there is either financial saving, workforce or time savings. Where an initiative crosses another programme, it will be important that productivity supports how this is captured and that we are not double accounting any financial savings.
The role will contribute to workforce up-skilling through facilitation of knowledge share events. A pilot programme has been run with an initial cohort of finance business partners and commercial business partners. The SEO will be responsible for continuing to roll out this up-skilling using a programme of “lessons” that has already been developed. These sessions may also be appropriate to roll through a business area, especially where an area has a lot of initiatives moving through the maturity levels.
Innovative visualisation and presentation of complex financial data sets and the ability to communicate this to non–finance stakeholders will be essential. This will ensure opportunities to reinvest and provide the best return on investment are clearly understood, and that we can articulate why some opportunities are prioritised over others. This narrative will be developed with support from finance and commercial business partners as well as our delivery partners.
As resources are squeezed and demand on war-fighting capability increases, this role will be key to how we maintain a balanced and affordable position in Air and demonstrate the organisation is an investable proposition for future resource.

The successful candidate will be pro-active with an ability to self-manage their workload. They will be pro-active in seeking opportunities to improve what the team delivers and be willing to work with the senior manager to grow into a brand-new role and team. They will be comfortable engaging at all levels of the organisation, with an ability to teach and support the organisation as it learns.

They will be passionate about change and be willing to support areas and teams through this period. They will have good literacy and numerical skills to communicate complex financial data to non-finance stakeholders.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
