Job description

The Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology (CST) is one of the most senior independent scientific advisory bodies in the UK. It provides advice directly to the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers on high priority, cross-departmental science and technology issues.

GO-Science is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join us as Head of Engagement. If you have experience in stakeholder engagement or secretariat functions and are looking for a new challenge this role could be for you. 

As Head of Engagement, you will provide leadership to a small team within the CST secretariat responsible for maintaining the Council’s reputation and influence.

Key responsibilities

Stakeholder management is a key part of this role so highly developed communication, interpersonal and influencing skills are crucial, as is a flexible approach to balancing the competing demands of stakeholders and workloads. The postholder will be responsible for:

• Defining and leading the Council’s stakeholder engagement functions including engagement with Ministers, senior government officials, and domestic and international stakeholders from across the science, technology and innovation community.

• Leading a small team responsible for the planning of quarterly CST meetings with Ministers and senior government representatives and to arrange expert guest speakers.

• Leading the Council’s international engagement programme with equivalent Prime Ministerial/Presidential Councils, including the US President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

• Leading on secretariat functions and membership, including correspondence, performance, recruitment and ensuring good practice on standards in public life.

• Overseeing branding and social media to amplify advice from the Council.

Skills and experience

Essential:

• Experience building credible and collaborative relationships with external experts and government officials.

• A strong communicator, able to communicate with clarity and impact to a range of audiences. You will often represent the CST and its work and need to be comfortable delivering your message to senior audiences.

• Excellent written communication skills and ability to set standards to ensure appropriate content, messaging, tone and consistency in all media communication.

• Excellent organisational skills.

Desirable:

• Proven experience of secretariat support (such as advisory committees or private office) or delivery of services to a senior board.

• Line management experience.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
