Job description

We're looking for a key individual motivated to help the department to drive impact for citizens and the economy.

We are a small Unit working closely with the Secretary of State with a ruthless focus on his top priorities. We track delivery progress and problem-solve when it is off-track. We’re looking for people who can tell a story with data, who are curious to know ‘why’ something is or isn’t working and can build the coalitions and partnerships with people to find out. The DU's measure of success is other teams achieving results: we don't seek the limelight but support SoS and teams to get the best for the people the department serves.

We work within the Strategy and Delivery Directorate at the heart of DSIT, alongside teams that develop the organisation’s strategy and align the department’s levers (fiscal, legislative, resources) to deliver it. 

We're looking for someone who can communicate insights in an engaging way, to support teams and senior audiences to decide what to do next. We're particularly interested in people with experience of DSIT's policies and programmes, with a perspective on how delivery is really working!

Key responsibilities

The team works in a project based way, with lots of collaboration across the Delivery Unit to generate the best possible thinking.

You’ll work with the department to stress-test delivery plans for policy proposals, assess delivery plans in train, set targets and benchmark how DSIT is doing against its comparators.

We conduct reviews to get the facts on the ground, what’s working and what isn’t - for people experiencing our policies and services, and those responsible for delivering them. You’ll be looking at data, helping develop new data streams where there isn’t enough, conducting fieldwork and qualitative and quantitative analysis to understand how we’re doing and bring it to life, providing insights to the Secretary of State as a result.  We want to help teams to connect policy and programmes to real-world impact on people's lives.

You’ll think about delivery with a fresh perspective, bringing energy and drive. You’ll need to structure ambiguous problems and help solve them, generate clear takeaways from complex information and make recommendations based on what the data says. You’ll need to motivate a diverse range of teams to work with you to act, building trust-based relationships to support your ability to make impact and deploying soft skills, pragmatism and the ability to compromise.  You’ll communicate confidently and in a structured way with people inside and outside the organisation and be collaborative by default.

- Demonstrably strong analytical skill set, able to turn evidence into meaningful insights, bring data to life, identify gaps and support going after these. 

- A team player who adds value and who understands how to drive delivery through others and across an organisation without ownership and who enjoys collaboration.

Desirable skills

- Some understanding of DSIT’s sectors or services: tech, science, research and innovation or digital public services. 

- Experience or understanding of Delivery Units or real-world experience of delivery in DSIT areas.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
