Job description

The Central Drafting Unit is responsible for the co-ordination of correspondence to Ministers from MPs, stakeholders and the public, as well as stage 1 and 2 customer complaints.

As an operation Manager you will build and support our staff to meet current and future challenges, including future plans to deliver responses within expedited timeframes. Key deliverables include establishing and embedding performance management good practice, promoting well-being and quality assurance of draft responses.

You will line manage up to six staff members and will lead a correspondence work stream, being responsible for daily workflow and setting operational direction, including chasing and escalating departmental performance concerns. Working closely with policy officials and Private Office.

This role requires the willingness to deal with resolving complex issues, such as cross cutting enquiries, finding solutions and ownership for handling. You must also be willing to take ownership of HR matters that may arise across your staff cohort, working with your member of staff, HR colleagues and senior leaders, where applicable. 

As the pace of work is driven by our departmental service standards, you will need to be able to work at pace, be flexible and show resilience during periods of peak activity.

Skills and experience

  • Strong written and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and knowledge of Word, Outlook and Excel will be beneficial.
  • line management experience within an operational environment is essential.
  • Experience of leading and motivating staff to achieve daily targets and meet shared key performance indicators
  • Evidence of working in a fast-paced environment and across multiple workstreams
  • Working collaboratively and effectively with a range of other managers and stakeholders to ensure customers receive a high-quality service
  • Ability to work autonomously, when required, to resolve complex queries

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK.
